Hagar’s Community Church shares daily reflections for Lent and Holy Week
by Tammy Warren | Presbyterian New Service
LOUISVILLE — The recently released book, “Fury and Grace: 40 Days of Paintings and Poetry from Prison,” edited by the Rev. Riley Pickett and the Revs. Layne and Crawford Brubaker, is now a podcast, too.
Devotions are read by one of the pastor-editors, with content provided by the women of Hagar’s Community Church, a 1001 New Worshiping Community inside the Washington Corrections Center for Women, the largest women’s prison in Washington state. The podcast includes original music by Jordan Bailey, and the book includes original paintings created by the women of Hagar’s as a spiritual discipline of worship.
All episodes of Fury and Grace, a podcast for Lent and Holy Week, are complimentary and will drop daily on Hagar’s Community Podcast. Listen to the Ash Wednesday episode here.
Hagar’s Community Podcast is a new ministry of Hagar’s Community Church, guided by the Rev. Riley Pickett, reentry pastor. She describes the podcast as being for people who need to be reminded that they are children of God, holy and beloved. The podcast explores spirituality and supports individuals who are recently released from prison through meditations, reflections, interviews, spiritual practices and stories.
The book, “Fury and Grace: 40 Days of Paintings and Poetry from Prison,” takes readers on a passionate pilgrimage using Scripture, poetry, paintings and prayers from the dust of Ash Wednesday to the dawn of Resurrection Sunday. The Lenten guide invites the reader to walk with members of Hagar’s Community Church and with Jesus, who knows what it is like to be arrested, rejected and despised. The book follows the Revised Common Lectionary passages for Year B. Profits from book sales support the ministry of Hagar’s Community Church.
Pickett and the Brubakers said they see the compilation of reflections in “Fury and Grace” — the book and the podcast — as a communal journey with God who is “with us every step of the way.”
