{"id":2119,"date":"2024-09-30T06:00:04","date_gmt":"2024-09-30T06:00:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.presbyterianmission.org\/weekly-offerings\/?p=2119"},"modified":"2024-08-15T13:25:19","modified_gmt":"2024-08-15T13:25:19","slug":"seeking-reconciliation-on-the-road","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/weekly-offerings\/2024\/09\/30\/seeking-reconciliation-on-the-road\/","title":{"rendered":"Seeking Reconciliation on the Road"},"content":{"rendered":"<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2127 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianmission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/PGW24-FB-POST-10-500x500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/PGW24-FB-POST-10-500x500.png 500w, https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/PGW24-FB-POST-10-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/PGW24-FB-POST-10-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/PGW24-FB-POST-10-600x600.png 600w, https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/PGW24-FB-POST-10-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/PGW24-FB-POST-10-1000x1000.png 1000w, https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/PGW24-FB-POST-10-125x125.png 125w, https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/PGW24-FB-POST-10.png 1440w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/>\n<p>While traveling across the American Southwest last spring, Kathy Mitchell was caught by surprise by the stories of her fellow travelers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody has a story,\u201d said Kathy, a Native American ruling elder at \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Trinity-Presbyterian-Church\/153854112026972\">Trinity Presbyterian Church<\/a> in Chinle, Arizona,\u00a0in the heart of the Navajo Nation. \u201cEverybody deserves to be heard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kathy\u2019s desire to share peace and seek reconciliation \u2014 both \u201cwith those parts of yourself and who you are called to be\u201d as well as through others along life\u2019s journey \u2014 unfolded on the road from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Phoenix during a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianmission.org\/ministries\/peacemaking\/travel_study\/\">travel study seminar<\/a>\u00a0hosted in 2023 by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianmission.org\/ministries\/peacemaking\/\">Presbyterian Peacemaking Program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cNative Lands of the Southwest: The Doctrine of Discovery and its Legacy Today\u201d Travel Study Seminar was a collaborative effort with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/santafepresbytery.org\/\">Presbytery of Santa Fe<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/synodsw.org\/\">Synod of the Southwest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar included opportunities for participants to visit historic sites, hear about Native American experiences and interact with PC(USA) Native American churches to understand the implications of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianmission.org\/ministries\/racial-equity-womens-intercultural-ministries\/gender-and-racial-justice-ministries\/doctrine-of-discovery\/\">Doctrine of Discovery<\/a>, which gave Christian European governments the religious and legal justification to claim lands occupied by Indigenous peoples.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar is made possible, in part, by gifts to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pma.pcusa.org\/donate\/make-a-gift\/gift-info\/PG999999\/\">Peace &amp; Global Witness Offering<\/a>. Traditionally received on World Communion Sunday, which this year falls on Oct. 6, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/specialofferings.pcusa.org\/offering\/peace-global-witness\/\">Offering<\/a>\u00a0is unique in that half of it is directed to peacemaking and global witness efforts at the national church level to address critical issues around the world. Twenty-five percent is retained by our congregation for our own peace and reconciliation work, and 25% goes to mid councils for similar ministries on the regional level. (TALK ABOUT HOW YOUR CONGREGATION AND MINISTRIES HAVE USED THE OFFERING)<\/p>\n<p>One congregation deeply committed to the healing and repair of Indigenous nations and communities \u2014 thanks to two of its members who participated in the seminar \u2014 is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.2presrichmond.org\/\">Second Presbyterian Church<\/a> of Richmond, Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiving in Virginia and having never visited the Northern Plains states, we learned a great deal about the Indigenous nations in that area,\u201d said Lucretia McCulley and her husband, Dan Ream. \u201cThe opportunity that the seminar offered for us to have conversations about history with Native Americans made this trip ideal for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not long after they returned to Richmond, Lucretia and Dan gave a presentation to their congregation about their life-changing experiences with the travel study seminar. As a result, Second Presbyterian approved a large gift to help with necessary repairs and improvements at Native American churches and chapels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are committed to sharing our gifts that will help address systems of conflict and injustice in the world,\u201d they said. \u201cWe also need to live out the denomination\u2019s commitment to peace and justice in our communities and across the world. Small and large contributions to the Offering work together to make significant changes for peace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Please give what you can to the Peace &amp; Global Witness Offering \u2014 for when we all do a little, it adds up to a lot.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Let us pray ~<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>God of Every Nation, we thank you for the gift of diversity, and we commit to a future where all people, equal in your sight, are treated as equal in our world.
