\u201cWelcome one another \u2026 just as Christ has welcomed you.\u201d (Romans 15:7)<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cMi casa es su casa\u201d expresses a sincere welcome to all. One hears this phrase often in Latina communities. When guests are in one\u2019s home, they become part of one\u2019s family.<\/p>\n

As a child of the manse \u2014 our home during my father\u2019s first pastorates \u2014 we lived next door to the church. As a result, there were always people \u201cat home\u201d who were not necessarily related to us by blood but whom we still considered part of our family. And even though our blood family lived far away, we nevertheless grew up in the company of many \u201ccousins,\u201d \u201caunts\u201d and \u201cuncles.\u201d Not to mention that the church, by extension, was also our home, our family.<\/p>\n

The familiar refrain from Psalm 23:6, \u201cI shall dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long,\u201d was a reality in our lives. There was something going on at church seven days a week, be it Sunday school and Sunday morning and afternoon worship and the churchwide meal that was scheduled in between. And then throughout the week there were choir rehearsals, midweek prayer and Bible study, youth group, Presbyterian Women and Presbyterian Men gatherings, events held at the church by other local organizations and Saturday church cleanup. Christian hospitality was expressed and experienced by all God\u2019s people every day.<\/p>\n

One of the words for \u201chospitality\u201d in the New Testament Greek is philoxenia<\/em>. It is a combination of phileo<\/em> (kinship love) and xenos<\/em> (stranger), meaning \u201ccaring for or loving strangers.\u201d Christian hospitality also denotes agape<\/em> love, which is God\u2019s love for all people.<\/p>\n

Sadly, the genuine welcoming of one another that has been so characteristic of Christian identity through the ages is less and less evident in society.<\/p>\n

In a world driven by xenophobia, or fear of the stranger, we are called more than ever to extend God\u2019s hospitality to the stranger, the poor, the ones we see as different or undeserving, even the ones with whom we disagree, and embrace all people as beloved family members.<\/p>\n

Our call is to welcome one another as Christ has welcomed us. This kind of welcome becomes our opportunity to love our neighbors, near and far, as God has loved us.<\/p>\n

Christian hospitality should reflect the ministry of Jesus extending God\u2019s love to all God\u2019s people. Jesus welcomed and befriended people whom we might label as undesirable and of ill repute, people with whom many wouldn\u2019t want to be associated.<\/p>\n

We find several instances in the gospel on how often Jesus welcomed people who were excluded. These people included sinners, lepers and foreigners, as well as those possessed by demons. Some of Jesus\u2019 closest companions were people from the margins, the \u201cleast of these,\u201d and also the reviled tax collectors. And it is these people from \u201cdisreputable backgrounds\u201d with whom Jesus broke bread, one of the most tangible expressions of hospitality.<\/p>\n

Even though God\u2019s family may not look like us, or speak the same language, or have our same traditions or worldview, as Christians we are called to express a sincere welcome to all. May we, then, extend Christ\u2019s extravagant and generous hospitality by embracing all God\u2019s people and saying to them, \u201cMi casa es su casa.\u201d (My home is your home.) \u201cMi iglesia es su iglesia.\u201d (My church is your church.) Let us welcome one another just as Christ has welcomed us, and endeavor to dwell together in God\u2019s house our whole lives long.<\/p>\n

El conocido pasaje de Salmos 23:6, \u201cEn la casa del Se\u00f1or morar\u00e9 por largos d\u00edas,\u201d fue una realidad en nuestras vidas.\u00a0Hab\u00eda actividad en la iglesia los siete d\u00edas de la semana, ya fuera la escuela dominical y la adoraci\u00f3n del domingo por la ma\u00f1ana y por la tarde, incluyendo la comida para toda la iglesia.\u00a0Y luego a lo largo de la semana hab\u00eda ensayos del coro, oraci\u00f3n y estudio b\u00edblico a mitad de semana, grupos de j\u00f3venes, reuniones de mujeres presbiterianas y hombres presbiterianos, eventos realizados en la iglesia por otras organizaciones locales y la limpieza de la iglesia los s\u00e1bados.\u00a0La hospitalidad cristiana se expresaba y experimentaba por todo el pueblo de Dios todos los d\u00edas.<\/p>\n

En un mundo impulsado por la xenofobia o el miedo al extranjero, estamos llamados m\u00e1s que nunca a extender la hospitalidad de Dios al extranjero, a los pobres, a los que consideramos diferentes o indignos, incluso a aquellos con quienes no estamos de acuerdo, y abrazar a todas las personas como miembros amados de la familia.<\/p>\n

Nuestro llamado es recibirnos unos a otros como Cristo nos recibi\u00f3.\u00a0Este tipo de bienvenida se convierte en nuestra oportunidad de amar a nuestro pr\u00f3jimo, cercano y lejano, como Dios nos ama.<\/p>\n

La hospitalidad cristiana debe reflejar el ministerio de Jes\u00fas extendiendo el amor de Dios a todo el pueblo de Dios.\u00a0Jes\u00fas dio la bienvenida y se hizo amigo de personas que podr\u00edamos etiquetar como indeseables y de mala reputaci\u00f3n, personas con las que muchos no querr\u00edan asociarse.<\/p>\n

Encontramos varios ejemplos en el evangelio sobre la frecuencia con la que Jes\u00fas dio la bienvenida a las personas excluidas.\u00a0Estas personas inclu\u00edan a pecadores, leprosos y extranjeros, as\u00ed como a los pose\u00eddos por demonios.\u00a0Algunos de los acompa\u00f1antes m\u00e1s cercanos de Jes\u00fas eran personas marginadas, los \u201cm\u00e1s peque\u00f1os de estos,\u201d y tambi\u00e9n los despreciados cobradores de impuestos.\u00a0Y son estas personas de ‘antecedentes de mala reputaci\u00f3n’ con las que Jes\u00fas parti\u00f3 el pan, una de las expresiones de hospitalidad m\u00e1s tangibles.<\/p>\n

La familia de Dios puede no parecerse a nosotros, ni hablar el mismo idioma, ni tener nuestras mismas tradiciones o visi\u00f3n del mundo.\u00a0Como cristianos estamos llamados a expresar una sincera bienvenida a todas las personas. Que podamos, entonces, extender la extravagante y generosa hospitalidad de Cristo abrazando a todo el pueblo de Dios y dici\u00e9ndoles: \u201cMi casa es su casa. Mi iglesia es su iglesia.\u201d D\u00e9monos la bienvenida unos a otros como Cristo nos ha recibido y esforc\u00e9monos por vivir juntos en la casa de Dios todos los d\u00edas de nuestra vida.<\/p>\n
