I<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Once upon a time there be . . .<\/strong>
\nThere be a Doctrine of Discovery<\/em>,
\nDum Diversas, Romanus Pontifex,<\/em> and Inter Caetera, <\/em>three decrees,
\nPapal bulls of the 15th<\/sup> century (lead bulla sealing
\nwith the heads of Peter and Paul, two saints they be),
\nPromised Land conquest, Christendom, and Crusading legacy
\ncharging European royalty
\nto commission explorers to sail the seas
\nto New (empty, nulla terra,<\/em> they presumed) promised Worlds to gallantly
\n\u201cdiscover\u201d, conquer and claim territory, and demand fealty
\nof \u201cunchristian\u201d civilizations who already for millennia lived there free,
\nfree upon the mountains, plains and valleys,
\nfree on rainbow deserts and among woodland trees,
\nfree, in eon-carved canyons, cliff side caves and kivas<\/em> deep,
\nfree along shores of rivers, lakes, and seas,
\nfree to net salmon and hunt deer,
\nfree to pick berries and to plant seeds,
\nfree to grow The Three Sisters\u2014<\/em>squash, corn, and beans,
\nfree to sew buffalo-skinned robes and wampum beads
\nfree to live in long houses, hogans, pueblos, and tee pees,
\nto weave patterned rugs and kiln molded pottery,
\nto create fringed medicine bags and turquoise and silver jewelry
\nto raise totem poles and follow eagle\u2019s wing,
\nfree to chisel kachinas<\/em> from cottonwood rootings,
\nfree to roam, to follow seasons\u2019 bidding,
\nsun\u2019s warmth, stars\u2019 behest, and moon\u2019s tiding,
\nfree to exist, to quest, to reverence Turtle Island\u2019s<\/em> fecundity,
\nfree to self-determine in tribes, nations, clans, bands, and confederacies,
\nfree to self-govern with councils and chiefs,
\nfree to honor Great Spirit\u2019s Mystery,
\nthrough Life Ways, shaman, and sacred ceremony,
\nfree to sing, to dance to flute\u2019s lilt and drum\u2019s beat,
\nfree to celebrate, to give thanks for All Being,
\nIn Beauty walking, walking in Beauty\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

Once upon a continuing time there be\u2026<\/strong>
\nThere be friendship between
\nthe giving Ancients, with hoped-for reciprocity,
\nand voracious new \u201cChosen\u201d Settlers as they set up colonies
\nand sought to make \u201csub-human\u201d infidels convertees.
\nBut broken trust turned to frictioning,
\nand friendship medals and trading
\nturned to greed, and greed turned to taking
\nland (the land of the free,
\nhome of the brave), and conflict and violent sprees,
\nwith the French, Spanish, English and the Colonies,
\nand taking more land and trees,
\ngold, and slavery\u2014no agency,
\nwhich turned to resisting
\nand Red Cloud Warring and paper treaties,
\nand treaties became broken treaties,
\nbroken promises and nightmare dreams,
\nextinction of\u00a0 buffalo and beaver, destroyed ecology,
\nno sensibility, cruel genocide of humanity,
\nSand Creek<\/em> and Wounded Knee,<\/em>
\nassimilating and disappearing
\nthrough boarding school trauma and decree,
\nforbidding native tongues, songs, dress, culture, and spirituality,
\nimposing state and church calumnity, calamity, complicity,
\nto civilize and Christianize the killing, dead, and dying,
\ndysfunctional theology and gone-wild evangelizing
\nin the name of the One saying love thy neighbor and enemy<\/em>,
\nand bring relief to the suffering<\/em>,
\nstarving, imprisoning,
\ndisease, and Dakota 38<\/em> mass hanging,
\nreservations, shrinking, confining,
\nand Trailings of Tears<\/em> from sea to shining sea,
\nSettlers, transcontinental trains and gold rushers colonizing,
\nwetiko<\/em>, white people\u2019s pandemic mind virus, cannibalizing,
\npushing First Nations north, south, west, east,
\ndivine Manifest Destiny\u2019s<\/em> stolen land complete\u2026
\na silenced people, a truncated history
\ncelebrated by fictionalizing Columbus Day feat
\nand Indian and Pilgrim Thanksgiving Feast,
\nthe indoctrination and incarnation of the Doctrine of Discovery<\/em>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

II<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>
\nAnd, shortly thereafter upon a time there be . . .<\/strong>
\nThere be even more conquistadores by land and sea,
\nsent by the Doctrine of Discovery<\/em>
\nto southern civilizations of Quetzel, Pachamama,<\/em> and Chakana<\/em> cosmology,
\nto lands of desert coasts, tropical forests, and oh so high mountain peaks,
\nto Nazca Line<\/em> plains and glacier-fed streams
\nto llamas, pumas, and condors soaring,
\nto mathematic, scientific, and engineering ingenuity,
\nto architectural, artistic, and agricultural originality,
\nto pyramids, sun dials, crop terracing and irrigating,
\nto mounds and mortarless tightly-fitting boulder walling,
\nto tambo<\/em> to tambo <\/em>marathon relay-running chasquis<\/em>
\nwith quipus<\/em> and pitutus<\/em>, proclaiming and explaining,
\nto charangos, quenas<\/em>, and chicha <\/em>dancing,
\nwelcomed by the ancients so curiously,
\nthey greeted them with boats, horses, and swords a gleaming,
\nto conquer foretold cities of gold and jaden masquery,
\nto supplant the cross for pagan heresy,
\nthey looted, plundered, and killed so freely,
\nancient Aztecs, Mayans<\/em>, and Incans<\/em> marauded so mercilessly,
\ncovered in blood as gold and the enslaved were cargoed back across the seas,
\nto the European home whose legacy here is continuing
\nthrough mining\u2019s polluting and resource depleting,
\nexploiting poor indigenous land and communities\u2014
\ncaught between rebels\u2019 and rulers\u2019 fighting,
\nanother incarnation of the Doctrine of Discovery.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

III<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

And once again upon a time there be . . .\u00a0 <\/strong>
\nThere be sailing to this new vicinity,
\nfrom African Kingdoms to the east
\nadventurers also charged by the Doctrine of Discovery<\/em>,
\nguiding boatloads of sardine-packed human chattelry,
\ntogether bound, rocking and rolling
\nto each wave-upon-bow beat,
\ncrashing amidst screams and dreams
\nand grievous laments of\u00a0 futility,
\ngreen and golden ancestor land a distant memory\u2014
\nlush forests, jungles, savannah and fauna aplenty,
\nnow dumped on New World shores unceremoniously,
\nchained to cages but separated from home and families,
\nIndian-vacated lands, now plantations, enslaving,
\ntraumatizing generationally,
\nto quench the thirst of cotton and tobaccy,
\nsugar, rice, and coffee monopolies,
\nand lead and gold mining companies,
\ncondemned to worse than poverty,
\nas white land owners pretended chivalry,
\nwhile denigrating, segregating, and lynching,
\nand contriving racial identity superiority
\nto maintain white racial purity,
\ndefending to death in Civil War\u2019s incivility,
\nand holding these<\/em> self-evident truths<\/em>\u2014yes siree,
\nfor all, justice, life, happiness and liberty<\/em>,
\ncodified in We the People<\/em> constitutionality,
\nJunteenth Emancipation Day<\/em>, free!\u2014but not really,
\nand hundreds of years later, deferred dreams,
\nstill entrenched in injustice duplicity,
\nflag-wrapped, head-hooded, cross-burning temerity,
\nfear and hatred-garbed brutal apartheid and white supremacy,
\nor separate and equal, prejudice, and white privilege\u2014more politely,
\npower drenched in the blood of black chronology,
\nJim Crow<\/em> travesty, convict leasing,
\nshare cropping, indentured servanting, no equal opportunity,
\ncartooned in minstrel and caricatured artistry,
\nvictims of inhuman medical and scientific experimenting,
\nmigrating from south to north, west and east
\nto escape and seek longed-for safety,
\nonly finding unemployment and unwelcoming crowded cities,
\nand predatory lending and legal red-lining,
\nextending to ghetto dwellings and mass incarcerating,
\ntargets of governmental and vigilante harassing, stalking, and killing,
\nsacrificial lambs to false gods offering,
\ndangerously navigating black while walking, driving and living,<\/em>
\nhaving The Conversation<\/em> with young ones to increase their surviving,
\ngaping divides between the poor and the wealthy,
\n(no GI Bill benefits or inherited family property),
\nbetween the book-educated and the life-educated, the sick and the healthy,
\nprevented by law from realizing innate potentiality,
\nreconciliatory guilt masking as reparationality,
\nblack and white trauma intertwining,
\nyet two diverging tragic historical trajectories,
\nthe Doctrine of Discovery<\/em> once more incarnating,
\nstolen labor, stolen lives, fait accomplit<\/em>!
\nYet somehow there be,
\nthere still struggling and proudly be
\nendurance and strength and spirit spontaneity,
\npassionate vitality, courage and creativity,
\ncivil rights sit-ins and non-violent resisting\u2014
\nprotesting, boycotting, desegregating,
\ndemonstrating, marching, freedom-riding,
\npreaching, praying, lobbying, and writing,
\npushing the extremities
\nof suffocating, unjust boundaries,
\nnot stopped by heckling or horse stomping,
\nbullets flying, fire hosing, and baton beating,
\nand torn apart by snarling canine\u2019s vicious teeth,
\narrested, shackled, jailed, bombed\u2014too much killing,
\nDred Scott, Harriett Tubman, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King,
\nproclaiming inconvenient, unsettling
\nTruth to evil power and status quo investing,
\n\u201cWe Shall Overcome\u201d<\/em> decisionally, intentionally, futurically.<\/p>\n

<\/h4>\n

IV<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now, upon a time there be . . .<\/strong>
\nThere be a continuing legacy of the Doctrine of Discovery<\/em>,
\nstolen land, stolen labor, the foundation of our nation\u2019s prosperity,
\nstolen promise, stolen hope, stolen dignity and security,
\nfive hundred-year-old inherited edicts still defining,
\npresumptuous exceptionalism opining,
\na City Upon a Hill<\/em>, out-of-context scripturing
\ncatalyzing nationalistic visioning,
\nsystemic racism, religious bigotry,
\nxenophobia, gender oppressing, myopic redacting of history,
\nspawning military crusades and religious legitimizing,
\nwinners spinning and controlling the arcing story,
\ndomination system, corruption, and exploitation thriving,
\nempire\u2019s policies and Supreme Court precedent legalities,
\ngovernmental eminent domaining
\nand corporation hegemonic land-grabbing,
\nlocally, nationally, and globally, an exploding frenzy\u2014
\ndrilling, fracking, mountain top-removing,
\nfossil fueling, extraction industry pathology,
\npolluting, fertilizing, pesticiding, desecrating
\nsacred places and depleting
\nair, water, and soil once pristine
\n\u2014Standing Rock<\/em>, front-line troops, water protecting,
\nwar and peace economies freebasing
\nand high on destroying and contaminating
\nunder the guise of self-interests defending,
\nand consumers, like locusts swarming,
\nwanting, buying, devouring,
\naccumulating and storaging,
\nwasting more than needing,
\nconstantly rat-racing and tread-milling,
\nrun amuck social media, TV,
\nand movie fantasy commercializing,
\nand my, my, mine\u2014me, me,
\nme-first hyper-individualism selfies
\nand Facebook immortality,
\nand First and Second Amendment Security,
\nnation-states still conquering
\nin the shadow of nuclear technology\u2014
\na house of cards, no accountability and no sustainability
\nleave systems of Earth and all that is in it<\/em> collapsing
\nunder the weight of arrogance and greed,
\neconomic, political, cultural restructuring
\n\u2014the whole ecology topsy-turvy,
\nsociety cross-purposed in paralyzed bi-polarity,
\nresurging nooses and flags of the Confederacy,
\nswastikas, nazi saluting, and Don\u2019t Tread on Me<\/em>,
\ndomestic abuse, women and children disappearing,
\nepidemic alcohol, drugs, opioids addicting,
\nmass murders and suicides alarming,
\nviolence, terrorism and \u00a0warring, planet warming,
\nclimate changing, pandemics raging,
\naffecting the poor disproportionately,
\nexacerbating racial disparity,
\nfires blazing, glaciers retreating,
\noceans rising, storms intensifying,
\ndoubters decrying, denying and defying
\nscientific facts and prophets\u2019 warnings,
\npopulations over propagating,
\nswarming, frantically escaping, migrating, immigrating,
\nthe sixth great extinctioning\u2014
\nmammals, trees and bumble bees grieving,
\nand what or who will be next\u2014humanity?
\nStop the World, I want to get off!<\/em>\u2014lamenting grievously\u2014
\nthe present incarnation of the Doctrine of Discovery<\/em>.
\nYet always there a remnant or diaspora be,
\nLight through dark shadow breaking,
\nleaven rising, salt preserving,
\nvirgin seeds quickening, awakening, hardened ground quaking,
\nNew Life persisting, insisting, enlisting
\nThose Who Be Caring.<\/p>\n

<\/h4>\n

V<\/strong><\/h4>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>
\nPossible now\/future upon a time there be . . .<\/strong>
\nThere be a new era choice:\u00a0 business as usual, Anthropocene<\/em>
\nor Ecozoic<\/em> New World, sans the Doctrine of Discovery,
\nexcised from legal memory,
\na new Way to BE Earth Community\u2014
\na new Way of human knowing, doing, and \u00a0being,
\nMother Earth-restoring policies and economies,
\nconsciousness, care, compassion, courage, and creativity
\nincreasing, in sync with the beat of Life\u2019s ever emerging,
\nwondrous individuality, diversity, communion, and complexity,
\nhonoring all our relatives: \u00a0animal, vegetable, mineral equitably,
\npartnering equally, sensibly, and unambiguously
\nto take responsibility for Earth\u2019s posterity,
\nseventh generation integrity,
\nliving simply (reducing, reusing, recycling, rethinking),
\ncooperatively and peacefully,
\nwith clean air, water, and soil, and oceans free
\nof oil slicks and plastic debris,
\nnew healing practices and learning
\nwhat is essential and necessary,
\npromoting well-being and health care accessibility,
\ncreating sustainable, resilient, and vital local communities,
\nreceiving not deceiving, using not abusing Earth\u2019s generosity,
\nmana<\/em> for all but not more than needing,
\ninviting and encouraging participatory
\nvisioning and planning democracy,
\nfor the Common Good, \u00a0for all, justice, life, happiness, and liberty,<\/em>
\nrebuilding trust, healing wounds through truth, apology,
\ndenouncing wrongs, reparationing, and reconciling,
\ndiscovering, developing, deploying,
\nhonoring, and celebrating the gift and ability
\nof each human, cultural, and earth entity,
\na new renaissance of guilds, sodalities, and artistry,
\nbridging chasms of mistrust caused by fear and enmity,
\ngrass-roots movements\u2014steadfast and serving,
\nrisking and heroing in anonymity,
\ncontinuing to learn and explore within limits and possibilities,
\nin silence and stillness, knowing
\nCreation\u2019s intimacy and stardust\u2019s infinity,
\nCosmos connectivity and energy:\u00a0 Awe-filled Mystery,
\nEarthrise Home, our common origin and destiny,
\nthe Universe from which we are birthed, our common story,
\nthis is our Home, this is my Home, my Home is in me,
\nwaiting, transforming, reborning, new every morning dawning,
\ntwenty-first century Phoenix sunrising,
\nRed, Black, Yellow, Brown, Tan, and White uniting,
\ndespite challenges and obstacles, and setback\u2019s inciting,
\nhearts, minds, strength, and souls joining, dancing and singing,
\nsharing Earth\u2019s bountiful grace, mercy, and hospitality
\nin Hope beyond hoping,
\nJoy and Thanksgiving unceasing,
\nand Love unconditioning.<\/p>\n

Once upon a time there be . . .<\/strong>
\nThere be such a Reality . . .
\nDare humanity really Know, Do, and Be,
\nand touch, hear, smell, feel, taste and see,
\nrisking boldly, in humility\u2014trusting not fearing
\nthat Life is Good, You are\/I am Accepted,
\nthe Past is Absolved, and the Future is Always Opening\u2014
\nLife\u2019s, Shalom\u2019s<\/em> beckoning Jubilee\u2014
\nin Beauty walking,\u00a0 walking in Beauty? . . .<\/em><\/p>\n
