DES MOINES, Iowa — Art Cullen, winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize and the editor of the Storm Lake (Iowa) Times, will speak at Central Presbyterian Church in Des Moines at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 30.
Central Presbyterian Church is at 3829 Grand Avenue. The talk will be held in the church’s fellowship hall.
According to a news release from the church, Cullen will share stories from his newspaper experience compiled in his 2018 book, “Storm Lake: A Chronicle of Change, Resilience and Hope from a Heartland Newspaper.”
Two years ago, Cullen was afforded journalism’s top honor, “fueled by tenacious reporting, impressive expertise and engaging writing that successfully challenged powerful corporate agricultural interests in Iowa,” the Pulitzer Prize Board said. The Times’ circulation is about 3,000 households. The family-run newspaper is published twice weekly.
Cullen’s book is part cultural history, part memoir. It explores the themes of family, community, immigration and diversity, the meaning of home, and the Heartland’s turbulent history and promising future.
A reception and book-signing will follow Cullen’s presentation. The event, part of the Jamie Wade Memorial Speaker Series, is free and open to the public.
