The Rev. Dr. Lee Hinson-Hasty

Dr. Jacqueline E. Lapsley, President, and the Board of Trustees at Union Presbyterian Seminary welcome the Rev. Dr. Lee Hinson-Hasty as the Seminary’s next Vice President for Advancement.

A gifted advocate for theological education, Hinson-Hasty is a B.A. graduate of Wake Forest University and  earned his M.Div. at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He received his D.Min. from McCormick Theological Seminary.

Ordained in 1995 as a teaching elder and a member of the Presbytery of Coastal Carolina, Hinson-Hasty has led a campus ministry, ministered as a hospital chaplain, guided a small church in mission and worship, and served as a pastor in the Presbyterian church. A relationship- builder, Hinson-Hasty was director of church relations for St. Andrews Presbyterian College prior to his work with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). In his almost two decades of service to the PC(USA), he consistently raises friends and funds to support future Presbyterian ministers through his collaborative style while focusing on a culture of generosity.

A natural communicator, Hinson-Hasty is known for his acumen in digital media. He is the host of the “Leading Theologically” podcast, where he regularly interviews current and future leaders across the country both inside and outside the PC(USA). As a trusted and wise conversation partner, he is called upon regularly as a strategist and confidant across the country in national, regional and local educational and ecclesial contexts.

A frequent guest speaker across the country, he welcomes invitations to collaborate, preach or present on theological education today, creating communities of call, stewardship that matters, mentoring and more.

Since 2015, Hinson-Hasty has served as Senior Director of Theological Education Funds Development for the Committee on Theological Education at the Presbyterian Foundation after a decade serving as the coordinator for theological education and seminary relations with the Presbyterian Mission Agency. Hinson-Hasty values the health and vitality of partners in the theological leadership ecology. He has served as chair of the board of the Forum for Theological Exploration, as a trustee for the Foundation for Theological Education in Southeast Asia, and currently as a board member for the growing UKirk Collegiate Ministries Association, the PC(USA) national campus ministry association. In addition to the Academy of Religious Leadership and the American Academy of Religion, Hinson-Hasty has for more than a decade been a member of Lectio Jubilate, “The Joy of the Text,” a pastoral formation cohort of pastors from across the country.

Union Presbyterian Seminary President Lapsley said, “Lee will bring a powerful set of experiences and skills to the work of Advancement at UPSem, along with a strong commitment to, and giftedness for, relationship-building among Union’s friends and future friends. I am thrilled to be welcoming Lee into our work together at UPSem.”

As one with strong ties to both Virginia and North Carolina, Hinson-Hasty said, “I’m excited to join the UPSem team. To paraphrase the late Dr. Katie Geneva Cannon, empowering others to live out their call is the ‘work my soul must have.’ Dr. Lapsley skillfully presides at a table where there is always room for one more to learn, to grow, to invest and to be fed deep down in their soul. Union has made a tremendous difference in my life and so many close to me. I look forward to deepening my partnership for the benefit of the Church in the world.”

The Rev. Dr. Tom Taylor, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Presbyterian Foundation, said, “Lee turned the tide of support of theological education in the PC(USA) during his time here at the Foundation. We have seen how his dedicated leadership has supported future ministers and Presbyterian seminaries across the country and widens connections of those who lead theologically. We will certainly miss Lee, but he is leaving the Theological Education Fund in great shape.”

Hinson-Hasty is married to the Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Hinson-Hasty, professor of theology and ethics at Union Presbyterian Seminary. They will reside in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Hinson-Hastys have a son who is a software developer and a daughter who will be attending the University of Richmond this fall.

Lee Hinson-Hasty will be on the Richmond campus of UPSem regularly. He officially begins his duties on August 1.
