Moving from the ‘is’ to the ‘ought’

Several years ago I was sitting in a room full of religious and community leaders from across middle Tennessee. It resembled a typical clergy meeting, but what made that gathering distinct for me was that half of the leaders were Muslim.

‘Got Sermon?’

In her lifetime, Dr. Su Yon Pak has occupied many chairs. A native of South Korea — and a cradle Presbyterian — Pak immigrated to the U.S. at the age of 10. After graduating with a degree in organic chemistry, she earned her master’s degree in Christian education at Princeton Theological Seminary. Pak has since lived in Scotland, where she worked at Shakti Women’s Aid in Edinburgh, a women’s shelter and center for women of color.

‘Got Sermon?’

Launched in 2008, Got Sermon? was intentionally designed to bring the gifts of Union’s faculty to primarily parish-based preachers seeking inspiration for the homiletical task during the most demanding times of the year. The lectionary study series offers a twice yearly, day-long conference corresponding to the liturgical seasons of Advent and Lent.
