On Thursday morning, The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Office of Public Witness (OPW) on Capitol Hill hosted members of the Texas Legislature who left the state last month to block passage of restrictive voting laws.
The Advocacy Committee for Women’s Concerns released the following letter on Wednesday:
Singing freedom songs and fighting for voting rights and a living wage on Monday, women from around the country converged on Washington, D.C., for a march and season of action by the Poor People’s Campaign (PPC) and its supporters.
At least 100 women will gather in the nation’s capital at 11 a.m. Eastern Time July 19 for the Women’s Moral Monday March on Washington to fight for democracy, voting rights and a living wage.
The Rev. Jimmie Hawkins, Associate Director of Advocacy in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), will be participating with the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival in four weeks of “Moral Monday” non-violent direct action events to call for voting rights and the $15 minimum wage.
Long before the pandemic and the social upheaval of 2020 following the murder of George Floyd, the church had been preparing and mentoring leaders who could lead communities in faithful means of protest. The New Poor People’s Campaign, co-chaired by Presbyterian pastor the Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis and Disciples of Christ pastor the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, is one such visible and contemporary example of this work.
The Poor People’s Campaign says it’s high time the nation undertakes a Third Reconstruction. The campaign, co-chaired by the Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, a Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) pastor, and the Rev. Dr. William Barber II, took an initial step in that direction Monday with a rally in Raleigh, North Caroline, which PPC livestreamed here.
