After conference musician Warren Cooper delivered a soothing version of “There’s Just Something About That Name,” those attending the Presbyterians for Earth Care conference heard a sermon Thursday by the Rev. Dr. Diane Givens Moffett, this time drawing on familiar themes from Esther 4:12-14 and 5:1-2.
Presbyterians for Earth Care began its four-day “The Climate Crisis & Empowering Hope” hybrid conference Wednesday with worship, where the Rev. Dr. Diane Givens Moffett, president and executive director of the Presbyterian Mission Agency, used Psalm 46:1-7 to preach on “Consider Our Hope.”
Over her long career in higher education and in hymnody, Dr. Melva Wilson Costen taught her students that music is a gift from God that can lift our spirits and serve as a refuge during difficult times. “It speaks,” said the Rev. Addie Peterson, eulogizing Costen on Saturday at Central Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, “when we don’t know the words to say.”
Special guests have been announced for an advocacy and activism conference kicking off Oct. 20 at the Presbyterian Center in Louisville, Kentucky, to empower young adults to make their voices heard on important issues.

The Office of Christian Formation of the Presbyterian Mission Agency has received a grant of $1.25 million from Lilly Endowment Inc. to come alongside parents, caregivers, churches and worshiping communities to provide skills, opportunities for connection and relationship building, and the resources needed to enhance and prioritize sharing faith in households.
Carried onward throughout her sermon by expressions of support and applause, the Rev. Dr. Diane Givens Moffett brought the 47th biennial conference of the National Black Presbyterian Caucus to a close Saturday with message about taking a second look and seeing what’s in plain view.
Thursday was mostly a teach-in day for the Presbyterian Mission Agency Board as members took in Matthew 25 presentations on militarism from mission co-workers in Colombia and Guatemala and climate change from Jessica Maudlin, Associate for Sustainable Living and Earth Care concerns in the Presbyterian Hunger Program.
