A new readership study for Presbyterians Today (PT), the official denominational magazine of the PC(USA), offers an in-depth portrait of the publication’s recipients, their needs and interests, and their connection to the church. The survey, conducted by the PC(USA)’s Research Services office, was sent to 18,043 PT readers in March, and final findings were compiled and tabulated this summer.
The first year that Rev. Stephanie Ryder served as a pastor, the church’s administrative assistant quit, with her last day being the Wednesday of Holy Week. Serving as a solo pastor, it put the church’s administrative tasks on Ryder, on top of writing additional sermons and creating plans for three services. “I was really caught off guard,” she says. “I know now not to schedule anything during Holy Week that isn’t truly necessary.”
Why is it important for church leaders to have a voice in public media? This is among the topics to be explored by seminary students, pastors, church communicators and others during a March 20 event jointly sponsored by the Presbyterian Writers Guild and Columbia Theological Seminary.
As a pastor, I am reminded weekly during Sunday’s prayers of people that life is not easy. I listen as those in the pew ask
for comfort, guidance, healing and hope. I listen, and then I pray for our laments to turn into songs of praise.
Mary had a song of praise — one that thanked God for looking favorably upon her and the plight of her people — and so in planning this year’s Advent devotional, I thought it was fitting to hear from Mary and to be reminded once again that God sees us, hears us and is with us always.

Christians often sing “Amazing Grace” without understanding what it is like to actually be blind — either legally blind with diminished vision or completely blind. More importantly, what is it like for those who are blind when they come into a church? How are they treated? How are they incorporated into the worship service?

Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) communicators garnered twenty-five awards in the 2017 Best of the Christian Press competition sponsored by the Associated Church Press, the oldest and largest Christian press association in North America. The awards were presented April 20 during the ACP’s annual convention at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago.
Presbyterian Mission Agency communicators won 11 DeRose-Hinkhouse Awards from the Religion Communicators Council (RCC) at the organization’s annual convention in Atlanta on April 5.
