If there is a revered profession in my family, it is a life given to the ministry of the Presbyterian Church. In 1884, my great-grandfather J. Vernon Bell began his ministry as pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Dubois, Pennsylvania, almost 100 years to the day that I entered Union Theological Seminary in New York City.
When I met her, Consulee was a 57-year-old wife and mother of five who was angry at God and had turned to alcohol for comfort. Her husband, a struggling farmer, had followed the Hutu-led government of 1994 and had participated in the genocide of Tutsi (fellow Rwandans). After the genocide, he was sentenced to five years in prison for participating in it, and their land was confiscated. Consulee protested that he had only done what the government told him and now they were being punished. Her oldest son had taken care of her while her husband was in prison and had faithfully prayed for her.
New Castle Presbytery looked to its roots during an especially difficult time of church dismissals. However, by remembering where it came from while looking to the future, the presbytery better understood its calling.

Presbyterian World Mission is celebrating the life and mourning the death of the Rev. Dr. Mulumba Musumba Mukundi, general secretary of the Presbyterian Church of Congo (CPC) and rector of the Sheppards & Lapsley Presbyterian University of Congo. Born in 1945, he passed away earlier this spring.
Parents and youth ministry leaders have differing views on youth ministry, suggests a recent report from the Barna Group. The report, “Pastors and Parents Differ on Youth Ministry Goals,” is derived from the comprehensive State of Youth Ministry study released last November in cooperation with youth ministry resource organizations Youth Specialties and YouthWorks.
The Great Commission (Matthew 28:16–20) is an intercultural call to make disciples of all nations. As we engage in fulfilling this call, our commission to discipleship is sharing the good news of salvation with individuals from these nations in their own languages, traditions and cultures.
Biscuits for Bibles (B4B), a creative, schoolwide project led by the student government team at North Cobb Christian School in Kennesaw, Georgia, recently raised $718.31 to purchase 102 Bibles in the Tshiluba language for people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Close to half of all Protestant senior pastors have recently preached on racial reconciliation and more have publicly prayed about it, but few find that their congregations are urging them to address the topic.
