A prominent leader in the PC(USA) was well celebrated with a mix of laughter, tears, hearty applause and a fiesta like no other as Mission Presbytery gathered for its Oct. 18-19 stated meeting, where it officially sent general presbyter, the Rev. Dr. Sallie Sampsell Watson, forth into retirement.
As a rush of fresh-faced students filed into the Presbyterian Pan American School’s Harte Student Center, Dr. Joey King beamed with pride.
And rightfully so.
The new president of the small, PC(USA)-related college-preparatory school located in the Texas Coastal Bend some 90 miles north of the U.S.-Mexico border, has exciting plans to flourish PPAS’s most valuable resource, its students.
Although the iconic Sears, Roebuck and Co. catalog and its Christmas companion, the Sears Wish Book, are relics of a bygone age, the well-loved tradition of families poring over every one of its colorful pages in search of the perfect gift lives on in the Presbyterian Giving Catalog.
Lisa Allgood, a commissioned ruling elder and the executive presbyter for the Presbytery of Cincinnati, sometimes refers to herself as “the accidental presbyter.” After a 36-year career in the pharmaceutical industry, the trained immunocytochemist accepted a planned three-month stint when the presbytery called her to leadership.
That onetime staple in every youth pastor’s toolkit — the Polaroid scavenger hunt — is getting a makeover and making a comeback.
