The Presbyterian Women delegation to the 68th annual Commission on the Status of Women gathered Friday afternoon at New York’s Church of the Covenant, also known as the “The Church of the Nations.”
Empowering women and tackling poverty will be at the top of the agenda as a joint delegation of about 50 people from the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and Presbyterian Women (PW) heads to New York to take part in activities surrounding the 68th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68).
Young delegates to this month’s 67th Commission on the Status of Women called the opportunity “an awesome privilege” and “memorable” in reflections completed on behalf of the ministry area that supported their time in New York City, Racial Equity & Women’s Intercultural Ministries.
The Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, II, the Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), offered thanks to God and to those present during worship Sunday at Church of the Covenant in New York City “to be in the midst of a powerful gathering of women.” At the invitation of the church’s interim pastor, the Rev. Dr. Cornell Edmonds, Nelson preached Sunday as part of the 67th Commission on the Status of Women, an in-person and online gathering of about 8,000 people that runs from March 6-17.
The 67th session of the Commission on the Status of Women kicked off Friday for delegates from the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and Presbyterian Women with an orientation session from the Church of the Covenant in New York City that set the stage for a nearly two-week gathering to empower women and girls.
JyungIn “Jenny” Lee was a bit incredulous.She had come to an office event with Japchae, a popular Korean stir-fry dish of glass noodles, vegetables and mushrooms, sometimes including meat. Because of the arduous process of cooking Japchae, Lee explained that it was often the last dish people signed up for at potlucks.
The Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations welcomed the church’s 2019 delegation to the UN Commission on the Status of Women by celebrating the Presbyterian Women’s new status as a non-governmental organization accredited by the UN.
