The Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has appointed the Rev. Dr. Jerry L. Cannon as Vice President, Ministry Innovation, effective Nov. 1. The appointment of Cannon, most recently pastor and head of staff at C.N. Jenkins Memorial Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, one of the largest Black congregations in the PC(USA), strengthens the agency’s commitment to serve more and serve better in support of a changing Church.
“The world is hungry for healing and hope,” the Rev. Dr. Diane Moffett, president and executive director of the Presbyterian Mission Agency, told the Urban Presbyteries Network conference on Thursday following opening worship. “I want to remind us today to keep the main thing the main thing: the church’s call to make disciples of Jesus Christ.”
The Rev. Dr. Jerry Cannon used his prodigious and engaging hermeneutical skills Wednesday to cap a NEXT Church National Gathering that has taken a deep look at rest and restoration.
“What does it mean to actively follow Christ?” the Rev. Carlton Johnson asked three PC(USA) church leaders during a Vital Conversation panel discussion on Lifelong Discipleship Formation Wednesday, which is one Seven Marks of Vital Congregations (see section two).
Highlighting worship efforts during the pandemic ranging from high-tech and labor-intensive to one church’s “Call ‘Em All” telephonic approach, Thursday’s webinar on Hybrid Ministry: The Scattered Church was a balm for clergy and worship leaders who’ve struggled mightily with pandemic-induced issues including pastoral care, trauma and self-care.
During closing worship Wednesday at the Rethinking Evangelism digital conference, the Rev. Dr. Jerry Cannon said a “scandalous conversation” between Jesus and a Samaritan woman has much to teach Presbyterians about evangelism.
The Rev. Dr. Mindy Douglas had her heart set on studying biology followed by a career as a geneticist when she entered college. But, as she says, “God did a little God thing,” and she was called into ministry.
