PC(USA) Compassion, Peace & Justice offering 3 webinars in the coming week

Presbyterians can connect with Washington office, Peacemaking Program and UN ministry

LOUISVILLE – Three of the Compassion, Peace & Justice ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency will present webinars next week, giving Presbyterians and anyone else interested a chance to connect with the timely work of these offices.

At 11 a.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, Oct. 22, the Office of Public Witness will debut its “Faith & Politics” webinar series featuring members of Congress and other decision makers.

The first guest will be House Majority Whip U.S. Rep. James E. Clyburn (D-South Carolina), whose endeavors include the Democratic Faith Working Group. On its web page, the group says it works to engage with “faith leaders to discuss and formulate approaches that would do justice to Micah 6:8 and Matthew 25.” The “Faith & Politics” webinar series will focus on the guest’s faith journey and the role faith groups play in public policy discussions.

Later, at 2 o’clock that afternoon, the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program will continue its webinar series, “Standing Our Holy Ground: A Year-Long Look at Gun Violence and What the Faith Community Can Do About It.” This will be the fourth installment of the series, which has already explored the national epidemic of gun violence from youth, urban, and theological perspectives. Tuesday’s installment will look at the role of mental health in gun violence and what the media often gets wrong in that discussion.

And at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, the Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations will celebrate UN Day with a webinar featuring Ryan Smith, Director and Representative to the United Nations, and Sue Rheem, Mission Specialist for International Advocacy. They will talk about and take questions regarding the work of the UN Ministry, its role at the recently completed UN General Assembly, and upcoming events that bring Presbyterians to the UN, such as the Commission on the Status of Women.
