Mission leader encourages Presbyterians to give out of a sense of gratitude to God

LOUISVILLE — After the shopping surge of Black Friday and Cyber Monday ends, #GivingTuesday offers an opportunity to bear witness to the spirit of gratitude expressed on Thanksgiving Day, a Presbyterian Mission leader said.
“As Christians, our motivation for giving comes from our gratitude to God,” said Dave Crittenden, acting executive director of the Presbyterian Mission Agency. “GivingTuesday is a time to bear witness to our thankfulness and continue the celebration of gratitude that we experience on Thanksgiving Day. It can help us enter the season of greatest giving to churches and charities reminded of the gratitude that encourages generosity.”
The Presbyterian Mission Agency will partner with the Presbyterian Foundation to participate in #GivingTuesday on Nov. 28. Opportunities to give to the ministries of the PMA will be available through PMA’s #GivingTuesday webpage and opportunities to support other national and international ministries of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) will be available through the Foundation’s #GivingTuesday webpage. Both pages will link to each other so that visitors can navigate between the two pages.
The Foundation’s page currently has resources to help congregations invite support for their ministries on #GivingTuesday. Its Ministry Partnership Program helps congregations add an online giving option to their websites.
Now in its sixth year, #GivingTuesday was created by the 92nd Street Y, a cultural and community center in New York City, in partnership with the United Nations Foundation. This global giving movement last year drew participants in all 50 states and 98 countries. GivingTuesday’s organizers say that it enables people to “give back in smarter ways to the charities and causes they believe in and help to create a better world.” GivingTuesday is observed annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving.
“GivingTuesday is a wonderful opportunity for Presbyterians to support their church at every level and extend the reign of God in our world,” Crittenden said. “On this special day of giving, we can come together to demonstrate the generosity that is so prevalent across our church.”
