General Assembly commissioners put off electing new co-moderators until Saturday

LOUISVILLE — The three sets of candidates standing for co-moderators of the 224th General Assembly will have an additional day to polish their campaign speeches.
Hours behind on their first night of business, commissioners voted 349-120 shortly after 11 p.m. Eastern Time Friday to delay their decision over who the new co-moderators will be. That process will begin at 7 p.m. Eastern Time Saturday.
Whoever is selected will succeed the co-moderators of the 223rd General Assembly, Ruling Elder Vilmarie Cintrón-Olivieri and the Rev. Cindy Kohlmann, who moderated Friday’s online meeting.
No business had been scheduled for Saturday, but the Committee on Business Referral — the sole committee during this first-ever virtual assembly — recommended putting off the candidates’ speeches, commissioners’ questions, the vote itself and the installation of the new co-moderators until Saturday evening.
That process, Kohlmann said Friday, will take at least two hours from beginning to end.
