Intergenerational Valentine’s Day event celebrates women’s friendships

Posted 11:56am

The last thing that Laura Raffle wants to do on Valentine’s Day is have dinner out at a crowded restaurant. “Although we of course recognize the holiday, I find Valentine’s Day to be a bit overrated in terms of romantic love,” says Raffle, a member of the 1,300-member First (Scots) Presbyterian Church in historic downtown Charleston, S.C. “What I really love is the fact that it’s a fun day for my kids to get a special treat and to make Valentine’s Day cards, especially my four-year-old daughter, who is just learning how to write. For me it’s all about showing my love to my kids and my friends, especially my women friends.” Read more »

Documentary follows trails and triumphs of LGBTQ Presbyterian leaders

Posted 11:38am

These words are part of the opening screens of the recently released documentary “Out of Order.” The title sequence describes the years-long debate within the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) that led the denomination’s highest governing body—the General Assembly—to approve an official path to ordination for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) persons at its 2010 gathering. The decision was affirmed by a majority of the church’s presbyteries in 2011. Read more »

Like many seekers before him, the Rev. Amir Tawadrous came to American shores on a journey of discovery. Born and raised in Upper Egypt, Tawadrous had also lived with his family in France for two years before returning to Egypt to finish his bachelor’s degree and later his Master of Divinity degree. Life’s classroom

Posted 3:34pm

My call to mission is the result of mission work, mission schools, theological education and the rooting of the Protestant Reformation in Latin America where, since the 15th century, the largest numbers of historically and culturally Roman Catholics have lived. Ours is a religiously pluralistic region where popular religions—and now the fastest growing “nondenominational” Christian movements in the world—coexist with leading theologies of the future and with Christian theologies many centuries old. The small town of Lebanon (pop. 5,800) sits 70 miles southeast of Louisville in the heart of central Kentucky. Surrounded by lush farmland, the area is known as a hub for bluegrass music, manufacturing facilities and bourbon production. It’s also home to United Presbyterian Church, which hosted a prayer service in response to President Donald Trump’s January 27 executive order on refugees and immigration. Read more »

Theological Conversations launches yearlong celebration of Reformation 500

Posted 2:52pm

As Reformed churches across the globe start a yearlong observance of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation—precipitated by Martin Luther’s posting of his 95 Theses on the Doors of the All Saints’ Church in Wittenberg, Germany, on October 31, 1517—the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is entering both the celebration and the conversation.
