Big Tent closing worship encourages planting, cultivating seeds of change

In a room filled with individuals of many nationalities, the Presbyterian Intercultural Network (PIN) tackled the difficult subject of race relations in America.
The Big Tent pre-conference “Coming to America: Some Here, Some Forced, Some Welcomed, Some — Not,” was sponsored by the Racial Ethnic & Women’s Ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency and attended by a group of nearly 100 people. 
Bounding up to the pulpit with his laptop, Big Tent Bible study leader Eric Barreto cut right to the chase: “We have a problem,” he told Presbyterians gathered in Graham Chapel on the campus of Washington University in St. Louis.
“Even as the church is changing, even as our neighborhoods are changing, we as Christians don’t know quite know what to say in the face of these changes,” said Barreto, an associate professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary who was born in Puerto Rico and grew up in Slidell, Louisiana. He was leading the first of two Bible studies on the topic “Difference and Diversity in the Book of Acts.” 
For the past 25 years, Ghana has had a stable democratic government, and strong economic growth has allowed it to advance into the ranks of lower-middle income countries. While there are still many needs and challenges, the newfound stability and growth has freed people to think beyond their problems. As a result, more and more have begun reflecting on the country’s strengths and the unique aspects of its church and culture. They are now asking, “What are the gifts we have to give to the wider world?” 
Today, several congregations close to Stony Point Conference Center, many from the Hudson River Presbytery, will host the 2017-18 YAV class for Commissioning Sunday. This day acts as a reminder to both the Young Adult Volunteers (YAVs) and our church that we “do not go alone” in God’s mission. 
The Evangelical Church in the Republic of Niger welcomed mission co-workers Jim and Jodi McGill and their family to the country in July. The McGills have joined Claire Zuhosky, and Michael and Rachel Ludwig and their children, who have been in Niger since 2014. They have brought with them a wealth of experience, having served as mission co-workers in Malawi for 20 years. 
The moderator of the 216th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) was among five interfaith leaders denied access to a passenger jet headed for Israel this week. Rick Ufford-Chase was part of an interfaith delegation of 23 Muslims, Jews and Christians boarding a Lufthansa Airlines jet at Washington Dulles International Airport for Israel on Sunday.
