Applications are now being received for the new parent loan program through the Presbyterian Mission Agency. Available for Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) members, the parent loan, administered through Financial Aid for Service, offers a six percent interest rate. Read more »

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance responds to fires in Colorado, Utah and southern California

More than a dozen wildfires have been burning across Colorado and parts of Utah and California in recent weeks, leaving a path of destruction that includes nearly 300 homes and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of residents. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reports that firefighters appear to have gained the upper hand in most of the fires. Read more »

Violence escalates in Nicaragua, PC(USA) mission co-worker leaves temporarily

Two months ago, peaceful protestors in Nicaragua were brutally attacked by forces loyal to the government. The ensuing unrest has resulted in the death of nearly 300 people and many Nicaraguans won’t leave their homes for fear of being shot. A special commission of the Organization of American States is investigating the government’s involvement in the violence. Read more »

WCC climate change meeting explores ‘just transitions,’ plans for COP 24

The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has stressed that zero carbon emissions must be achieved by 2050 by the world if we are to avoid catastrophic climate impacts such severe and recurrent droughts, record-breaking storms as well as the inundation of small island states and coastal cities. Glory Banda was born in Malawi. She was also born deaf. Soon after her parents realized their child couldn’t hear, her father divorced her mother. Glory’s mother, desperate and brokenhearted, returned to live in her parents’ home. A child, who should have been a blessing, became the source of grief and pain. Read more »

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance calls on volunteers to help in disaster recovery

Strong hurricanes, record flooding and massive wildfires have taken their toll on volunteer groups aiding in clean up and recovery. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance says that groups have been working hard in recent years to help communities rebuild, but the continuous string of powerful hurricanes and other natural disasters are making it harder to find enough people to meet the need. Yes, the title is a tribute to the documentary on Fred Rogers currently in theatres, “Won’t you be my neighbor?” For about 40 years, Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood was featured on Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) stations as a children’s — but really families’ — afterschool program. Read more »

Texas kids to get a front row seat to persons living on fixed incomes

It’s one thing to see or read about the struggles of people living in poverty, stretching every nickel or dime. It’s another to get a true sense of what the daily struggle is like. The First Presbyterian Church of Fort Worth, Texas will be giving young people a small dose of what many low-income residents in their community deal with when it hosts a camp later this month for students in fourth through eighth grades.
