Giving God a divine shout-out and a high five

Posted 6:00am

When we see the world through the eyes of love, compassion and mercy – the way the Good Samaritan did – it’s like giving God a divine shout-out and a high five. Read more »

Woman of the cloth, woman of the belt

Posted 9:00am

A doctor of ministry degree would be easier than this for me. I told that to myself many times as I took three arduous 2½-hour tests, as well as a black belt practice test, all leading up to a final exam. This was over and above four years of rigorous classes, color belt tests and a binder full of requirements toward the rank of “1st dan,” the first-degree black belt in tae kwon do, a Korean martial art that emphasizes kicking techniques. ‘When you know you’re walking alongside something that’s really powerful’

Posted 6:00am

If Luis Ramos Salgado had tried to ride the storm out in his home, he wouldn’t be able to walk down his street on this sunny morning. “I’d be dead,” he says through a translator, standing in the kitchen of the only home he’s ever known in San Juan’s Caño Martín Peña area. Read more »

Connecting with the neighbors

Posted 6:00am

Late in 2018 the Korean Church of Boston, a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), helped to put on the Seventh Korean Cultural Festival, an event the congregation uses as part of what it calls an “ongoing effort to connect with our neighbors.” Read more »

Posted 6:00am

It’s a pretty port of call. Mere blocks from where cruise ships pull into San Juan terminal, visitors can find enticing Old San Juan, with its mix of history, shops and restaurants, all open for business, even on a warm but quiet Tuesday night. Veering right, visitors can find conveniences such as bike rentals and a CVS pharmacy, all up and running. “People go to hotels, Old San Juan and they see the stores open, lights … and they say, ‘Oh, everything is back to normal,’” the Rev. Edwin A. González-Castillo says. Except it’s not. Read more »

Old idioms, new meanings

Posted 6:00am

“The dishwashing detergent is lost.” In Cuba, one would say, “El detergente de lavar platos está perdido.” That means that you will not find dishwashing detergent in the store these days. As we enter our fourth year as mission co-workers in Cuba, we realize how easy it is sometimes to forget that we are strangers living in a foreign land. Read more »

Pipes, rebar form rudimentary delivery table in Ghana

Posted 6:00am

Back in 2013, I joined a German colleague of mine who was working in Ghana at the time on a visit to a rural health clinic run by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. The clinic was in the community of Kwahu Praso, about three hours northwest of Accra, the capital of Ghana, and for several years, it had been receiving financial support from some German Protestant congregations. The visit was a chance to learn more about the place and see how it was doing. Read more »
