Gifts to #Give 8/28 can make a difference in lives often overlooked by churches

The Rev. Dr. T. Janel Dixon exudes a positivity and boundless energy that give the impression that she can do it all. And, in many ways, she does. 
In the early 1990s, Third-Westminster Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth, N.J., was looking for a way to minister to the local community. 
In 2013, mission co-workers Cindy Corell and Mark Hare were working with Viljean Louis, coordinator of the Peasant Movement of Bayonnais in Haiti. More than 100 people in the mountain community arrived to receive training for starting yard gardens. They were to learn the skills and then share them with neighbors. 
The people who design and livestream worship need to be aware of the basics of copyright law, and an online workshop offered Tuesday by the Presbyterian Communicators Network helped nearly 100 participants to understand what’s required of churches, including laws that may be evolving even as the pandemic persists. 
As Latinx communities in the United States and abroad experienced the surging impacts of climate change, particularly Hurricane Maria’s devastating blow to Puerto Rico in 2017, Presbyterian churches in those communities began to explore how they could address the growing crisis. 
Their place at the pulpit offers Presbyterian preachers a weekly opportunity to persuade parishioners of the power and reach of God’s love for them — as well as hundreds of other messages found in Scripture. 
On Wednesday, Sept. 1, Presbyterian Peace Fellowship will gather in a global online celebration to honor Presbyterians Cheryl and Douglas Hunt with the Barstow Driver Award for Excellence in Nonviolent Direct Action in Retirement. The event begins at 8 p.m. Eastern Time, 5 p.m. Pacific Time. 
If necessity is the mother of invention, the pandemic is probably its poster child, calling on Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) programs and their leaders to remain creative and nimble. 
On Wednesday, Aug. 25, the Presbyterian Week of Action will turn its attention to the LGBTQIA+ community with events including a children’s story time and a poetry and story slam.
