Minute for Mission: World Community Day

World Community Day began in 1943 as a day for church women to study peace. After World War II, church leaders felt that they should set aside a day for prayer and ecumenical study. The leaders thought that while believers were performing peace and justice work by themselves, a day when they could study across denominations would be beneficial to all. The theme for this year’s World Community Day is “A Call to Prayer.” Read more »

In its official resolution, Congress sought to set aside time to “commemorate with thanksgiving and prayer and exercises designed to perpetuate peace through goodwill and mutual understanding between nations … with appropriate ceremonies of friendly relations with all other peoples.” Read more »

‘Togetherness and love’

One hundred years ago Knox Presbyterian Church accepted a gift — worth $250,000 in today’s dollars — for a church of the white race only. The congregation, led by the Rev. Adam Fronczek, confessed that tragic history in 2020. The church also made a commitment to a racial justice ministry, which it’s funding at $50,000 a year. Read more »

Keeping watch in a broken world

Evidence that we live in a broken world is all around. While some can accept this as simple reality and that we should just “get over it and muddle along the best we can,” others cannot. They are the ones deeply troubled by societal dysfunction and either try to work around it or, for the most ambitious, engage with full energy to ameliorate the impact of the dysfunction and address its causes.
