The Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, the son, grandson and nephew of Presbyterian pastors, was overwhelmingly elected Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) on Friday. While commissioners and advisory delegates worked hard in committees, 14 observers and mid-council staff attending the 222nd General Assembly (2016) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) meeting in Portland, Oregon worked to end hunger at the Oregon Food Bank Monday night. Joining two dozen other volunteers, the group repacked more than seven tons of carrots from 50-pound bags to more user-friendly sacks. Read more »

Approximately 25 environmentally-focused Presbyterians took a half a day away from General Assembly business for a bus trip along the Columbia River Gorge on Wednesday. Nestled between the Oregon/Washington State border, this vast waterway is a salmon spawning ground. Daniel Izquierdo, General Secretary of the Presbyterian-Reformed Church of Cuba (PRCC), spoke to members and invited guests of the Cuba Partnership Network on June 20 at the 222nd Presbyterian General Assembly. The statistics surrounding gun violence deaths in the United States are staggering. According to the PEW Research Center, more than 30,000 people are killed by firearms each year in this country. More than 30 are shot and murdered each day and half of them are between the ages of 18 and 35. Homicide is the second leading cause of death among 15 to 24 year olds and the primary cause of death among African Americans of that age group. Read more »
