The Rev. Maggie Alsup, chaplain and director of service at Lyon College, had been brainstorming with the director of the college’s counseling and student life center on “ways to help students integrate practices to help them rest and address stress and anxiety” when she saw a call for applications from the PC(USA)’s Teaching the Bible Grant. Lyon College, a Presbyterian-related college and member of the Association for Presbyterian Colleges and Universities, is in Batesville, Arkansas, two hours west of Memphis, Tennessee, and 90 minutes north of Little Rock, Arkansas. A single phone call nearly 20 years ago turned Jenni Whitford’s whole world upside down.
Jenni and her young family had only just returned from vacation when her husband’s workplace called.
“I came home from a session meeting and got a call that my husband, Ken, had collapsed,” recalled Jenni, who was then serving as a three-quarter-time Christian educator in her home church, First Presbyterian in Jackson, Michigan.
When they arrived at the hospital, Jenni and her two children, ages 9 and 12, learned that 36-year-old Ken Ellis — a dedicated husband and father — had died of an aortic aneurysm. Read more »

Did you ever have a dream of a street, a park, or perhaps a country being named after you?
Naming a country after himself was the arrogant feat accomplished by Cecil Rhodes, a British citizen in the late 1800s. As the founder of the British South Africa Company in 1893, Rhodes, besides reaping untold riches, managed to name a large territory in the southern part of Africa after himself, Rhodesia, a new country 1.5 times larger than his home country, England. No doubt a conquest bolstering his prestige in the gentlemen’s clubs of London, while his subjects spent lifetimes toiling and sweating in his diamond, gold and copper mines. Read more »

The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), A Corporation, the principal corporate entity of the General Assembly of the PC(USA), has received a $2,431,641 grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. through its Religion and Cultural Institutions Initiative.
