Walking Together in Prayer

A Letter from Myoungho Yang and Jiyeon Yoo, serving in Hong Kong

June 2019

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your loving prayers. Since last summer, your support has helped us walk boldly through very difficult moments. We know that many of you have prayed for Jiyeon since hearing about her hospitalization and surgery. Thank you for all the text messages, cards, and phone calls that encouraged and strengthened us. While she still needs lots of prayers for her full recovery, she gets better and better every day.

We are very encouraged that Jiyeon was able to participate in one of our school’s annual activities. Every March, the school holds a walkathon to raise funds for the Divinity School. Students, teachers, and all staff walk around the school. Although Jiyeon wanted to walk with them, her physical condition made us uncertain of whether she would be able to join the school community for this event. Though it may have seemed like wishful thinking at first, she did walk with them! The walkathon was the first gathering she participated in since she had her stroke last summer. It was a touching moment for her and for all the participants who have been praying for her recovery. We found the whole event extremely heartening.

We also thank God that Jiyeon was strong enough emotionally and physically to fly back to the U.S. from Hong Kong for our interpretation assignment (IA). It was a long and hard trip, but a joyful one. That we made this flight without any difficulties encouraged us greatly.

As many of you already know, IA is a wonderful opportunity for us to meet people and to visit churches in the U.S. and share about our ministry in Hong Kong. It is not only a time to share our ministry, but it also strengthens us emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Looking back on your smiles, words, hugs, and our meals together encourages us when we are serving in Hong Kong.

We will be in the U.S. until the middle of August and would love to meet you and share our stories in churches, presbyteries, or at any kind of gathering or meeting. Here are some ideas for possible settings:

• Special church events (any kind)
• Prayer meetings
• Fellowship or cell group gatherings
• Mission committee meetings
• Youth groups
• Young adult groups
• Bible study groups

Thank you for supporting our ministry in Hong Kong. We ask you to pray for the people of Hong Kong at this time as they face a critical moment in history. As many of you may have read in the news, millions of people in Hong Kong are out protesting to protect their freedoms. An Extradition Bill was proposed that would allow the transfer of fugitives to Taiwan, Macau, and mainland China. People fear there is a great risk that some — including citizens of Hong Kong — could be arbitrarily extradited to mainland China for prosecution if this bill is passed. On June 16 alone, about 2 million people, nearly 30% of the population of Hong Kong, filled the streets in protest. Protesters are demanding complete withdrawal of the Extradition Bill. Church leaders and theological institutions are also participating in these protests. Hong Kong Christians are praying for the mercy of God. Please join them in prayers for peace in Hong Kong and the healing of broken hearts through God’s grace and mercy. Pray also that the people of Hong Kong will experience the true peace that only God can give. As Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives” (John 14:27).
