Dear Friends in God’s Mission,
A child is born to us! A son is given to us! And he will be our ruler. He will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
As we approach Advent, the time of the year when we celebrate the birth of our “Wonderful Counselor” and “Prince of Peace” Jesus Christ, our pilgrimage of peace becomes even more relevant. Lately, the situation on the Korean Peninsula has become increasingly tense, and there are growing fears of war on the peninsula and an armed conflict in East Asia. But we strongly feel that there is a Kairos for all our efforts for Peace on the Korean Peninsula and beyond.
So we ask you to join our communal prayers, because we firmly believe that God will hear. Let us see a light of Peace on the Korean Peninsula!
As we celebrate the coming New Year of 2018, we’d like to share with you a little about how God has used us in 2017:
International Forum of Presbyterian Church in Taiwan (February 13-17): We participated in a program promoting harmony between Taiwan and mainland China. We also toured the Haulien Aboriginal Campus to see the new college ministry site and to discuss the ministry’s upcoming 20th anniversary (2019).
Suzhow and Shandong’s Seminary (February 28-March 4): We worked with the Presbyterian Church of Korea, in particular with the Exchange Professors Program that they share with the Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary in Seoul. There is a China-Korea Young Adult International Cultural Exchange Program this coming March through May, in which our two Korean participants will experience Chinese culture through the Amity Foundation’s Social Service agency in Nanjing, China.
Bongsu Bread Factory in Pyongyang, North Korea (March 21-25): We successfully delivered 30 tons of flour to the Korean Christian Federation (KCF).
Chosun School and Yodogawa Christian Hospital in Osaka, Japan (April 17-21): After holding a benefit concert on April 8 in Seoul for the Osaka and Narae Chosun Elementary School for Korean Japanese children—which gets no support from the Japanese government—we delivered proceeds to them and visited the PC(USA) Hospital in Osaka.
Assembly of the World Communion of Reformed Churches and Ecumenical Forum for Korea in Leipzig, Germany (July 1-10): After attending the Assembly of the World Communion of Reformed Churches, a delegation from the World Council of Churches and the National Council of Churches in Korea partnered with KCF delegates to facilitate peace on the Korean peninsula.
Regional Liaison Staff Gathering in Hong Kong (August 1-5): Here we discussed and shared our mission work in Asia and the Pacific with our Area Coordinator, Mienda Uriarte. We also met our partner churches in Hong Kong.
Visiting the Speaker of the Korean National Assembly, Sye-Kyun Chung, with four representatives from Korean partner churches.
The Korea Mission of PC(USA) (South Korea): God blessed the Korea Mission this year through helping us accomplish three important goals for peace in Korea. First, in February, alongside others experienced in doing humanitarian aid work in North Korea, we formed the PR (Peace and Reconciliation) Network for North Korea. Second, we founded the Peace Network for Korea in PC(USA) during our visit to Stony Point Center, New York, in October. Finally, we were joined in Korea by Stated Clerk J. Herbert Nelson, Director of World Mission Jose Luis Casal, and 14 other delegates for the Korea Peace Trip. Our group visited partner churches, No Gun Ri Peace Park (see our last mission letter), the Border Peace School, the War & Women’s Human Rights Museum, and the Korean National Assembly, where we met the assembly speaker. The visit culminated in conducting a Peace Press Conference, which resulted in our peace pilgrimage being reported in many newspapers.
We are delighted that the news coverage of our delegation has given and will continue to give the Korean people shalom in their hearts.
We sincerely hope that you will pray for peace with us during Advent, and that together we will make our voices for peace heard everywhere. Please continue to support us financially in 2018 as well as we continue to dedicate ourselves to peace on the Korean peninsula and in East Asia.
