Dear fellow co-workers in God’s service,

Greetings from Chiang Mai, Thailand.

We hope all of you enjoy the Lord’s grace, overflowing in our life always.

During this academic year that ended on March 5, Jiyeon and I have had the wonderful privilege of visiting many different churches with students every Sunday. We often left the school at 8 or 9 a.m. and returned around 4 p.m. When we visited churches far away in a rural area, we found that it was hot and tiring riding in a truck and bouncing along the rough road – especially on the way back. However, we enjoyed visiting new churches every week very much.

Sometimes the churches would provide Northern Thai food for lunch, which students and church members eat with their fingers instead of chopsticks. Jiyeon and I are still unaccustomed to eating this way, and we haven’t tried it yet. We also had a chance to cook Korean food for the students. It took almost two days for us to prepare, but we enjoyed eating and talking with 20 students.

After students take the end-of-term exams next week the school will be closed for the summer until the middle of June. While it is only the beginning of March now, it’s getting hotter and hotter. Now we realized why the school starts its summer break early in March. It is already hot in the morning, and it’s almost impossible to do any outdoor activities in the afternoon. We were told that it would be over 100°F every day in April. It is already 99°F today. We were used to the hot and humid weather when we were in Hong Kong for seven years, but it is going to be hotter than we experienced. One of the papaya trees that gave us fruit last year toppled over. It seems it couldn’t survive the heat.

Preparing a worship service | 예배 준비

There are two Vietnamese young men who have been studying Thai with us since we came to Chiang Mai. They are studying it to go to university in Thailand. Since they grew up in a socialist state, they have had no chance to hear about Jesus Christ. We have been thinking of them in our prayers since we first met them last year. One day we learned about the culture of Thailand in our Thai class. In this class, I also learned that both in Thailand and in Vietnam daily life and the journey of life are deeply impacted by a belief in the existence of ghosts. They believe that there are a great number of ghosts, and they fear those ghosts. It would not be wrong if we say that their life is overwhelmed by the idea of ghosts. I feel sad about that. They are bound by this belief. After that class, it came to my mind that it could be a good chance to share the gospel with them if we began talking about the subject of ghosts. Since we often had lunch or coffee together with them and they like Korean food very much, we invited them to our place for lunch and shared the gospel with them after the meal. Thankfully, they listened attentively, accepted it and we prayed together. They are not able to join churches in Thai because they are still learning the language, and we couldn’t find churches in English nearby. So, I thought there could be difficulties

for the seeds that had just been planted to grow well. But we are praying that the words in Philippians 1:6 will apply to their lives. “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

As we wrote in our last letter, we will be staying in the USA for two months beginning in the middle of March. We are hoping to visit churches and have time to encourage each other to participate in God’s mission. We would like to visit any form of gathering if you could give us an opportunity. Even if it’s not possible this time, we would appreciate it if you could join us by praying. We thank you for remembering us and thinking of us in your prayers. As we are passing these seasons of Lent and Easter, we hope all of us could know and experience the love of the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ deeper and deeper.

2023년 봄

또 한 학기를 마치며

그리스도 안에서 동역자되신 여러분들께,

태국 치앙마이에서 문안드립니다.
언제나 넉넉히 부으시는 주의 은혜를 누리시기를 바랍니다.

지난 1년 동안 학생들과 매주일 교회들을 방문했던 일정은 3월5일로 마쳤습니다. 1년 동안 여러 교회를 방문했습니다. 보통 아침 8-9시에 출발해서 오후 4시경에 돌아옵니다. 먼 지역에 있는 교회를 방문할 때는 돌아오는 길에 무척 덥고 덜커덩 거리며 달리는 차에 지치기도 했지만 매주 새로운 교회를 방문하는 일은 즐거운 일이었습니다. 방문한 교회에서 가끔 태국 북부식 식사를 대접할 때가 있는데, 이때는 모두 젓가락을 사용하지 않고 손가락으로 찰밥과 반찬을 조물거리면서 식사를 합니다. 저희에게는 낯설고 아직 그렇게 식사하는 것까지는 시도하지 못하고 있습니다. 1년 동안 함께 교회를 방문했던 학생들을 위해 식사를 대접하는 시간도 가졌습니다. 준비하는데 이틀이 걸렸지만 모두 20명이 와서 맛있게 먹어주어서 즐거운 시간이었습니다. 아마도 앞으로는 이렇게 많은 음식을 준비하지 못 할 듯합니다. 학생들은 이제 학기말 시험을 치르고 그 다음 주면 방학에 들어갑니다. 이제 3월이 시작되었는데 날씨가 점점 더워지는 것을 보니 3월에 방학을 하는 이유를 알 것 같습니다. 이제는 아침에도 더워지기 시작하고, 낮에는 야외 활동은 하기가 어려워지고 있습니다. 4월이 되면 100도가 넘는 날씨가 계속된다고 하는데, 벌써 어제부터 낮 기온이 99도가 되었습니다. 홍콩에서 지내는 동안 덥고 습한 날씨에 많이 적응이 되었지만 이곳은 그보다는 더 강열한 더위가 될 것 같습니다. 작년에 맛있는 파파야 열매를 맛 볼 수 있게 해 주었던 집 앞에 있던 파파야 나무 한 그루가 더위를 이기지 못했는지 뿌리 근처부터 무너졌습니다.

저희가 태국에 온 후로 태국어 공부를 계속 같이 해 오고 있는 베트남에서 온 두 청년이 있습니다. 태국에서 대학교를 다니려고 태국어를 준비하고 있습니다. 사회주의 국가에서 자라서 예수 그리스도에 대해서 한 번도 들어본 적이 없는 청년들입니다. 이 청년들을 처음 만날 때부터 저희들의 기도에 그들이 생각났습니다. 그러던 중 태국어 수업 시간에 태국의 문화에 대한 주제로 이야기를 하는 중에 태국 뿐만 아니라 베트남에도 귀신에 대한 믿음이 일상생활과 일생에 매우 깊은 영향을 끼치고 있는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 그들이 믿고 있는 귀신의 수도 많을 뿐만 아니라 귀신을 매우 두려워 한다고 합니다. 귀신에 의존하는 삶이라고 할 만큼 그런 믿음에 묶여서 사는 사람들의 모습이 매우 안타까웠습니다. 수업시간을 마치고 나서, 이 두 청년에게 귀신에 대한 이야기부터 시작하면 복음을 전할 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 수 있겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 가끔 같이 식사나 차를 마시는데, 그 청년들이 한국 음식을 좋아해서 지난 주에 저희 집으로 두 청년을 초대해서 같이 점심을 먹고 복음을 나눌 수 있는 시간을 가졌습니다. 감사하게도 두 청년 모두 복음을 받아들이고 기도하며 마칠 수 있었습니다. 아직은 태국어를 배우는 단계이기 때문에 태국어로 하는 교회는 참석할 수 없고 근처에서 영어로 하는 교회가 있어야 하는데 적당한 교회를 아직 찾지 못해서, 이제 막 뿌려진 씨가 잘 자라고 성장하는데 어려움이 있지 않을까 생각이 됩니다. 하지만 “너희 속에 착한 일을 시작하신 이가 그리스도 예수의 날까지 이루실 줄을 우리가 확신하노라”는 빌립보서 1:6절의 말씀이 그들에게 그대로 이루어질 것을 기도하고 있습니다.

지난 번 소식에 전해드린 것처럼, 저희는 3월 중순부터 5월 중순까지 두 달간 미국을 방문합니다. 여러 교회의 모임에 방문해서 하나님의 선교 사역에 함께 동참하기를 서로 격려하는 시간이 되기를 바라고 있습니다. 시간이
허락되시면 방문할 수 있는 기회를 만들어 주시면 어떤 곳이든 방문하고자 합니다. 이번에는 기회가 되지 않는다면 선교를 위한 기도로 함께 해 주시면 감사하겠습니다. 저희를 기억해 주시고, 기도에 저희를 생각해 주셔서 감사드립니다. 사순절과 부활절을 지내는 이 계절에 우리 주님의 십자가의 사랑을 더 깊이 깨닫고 느끼고 경험하는 소중한 시간되시기를 바랍니다.
