Dear friends,

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made! Psalm 139:14a
Soy una creación maravillosa, y por eso te doy gracias. Salmo 139:14a

This phrase from Psalm 139 was the central guide and theme for Frontera de Cristo’s recent board, staff, family retreat held this year in Puerto Peñasco on the Sonoran coast, on July 20-23, 2022.

This biblical text lived in me while I prepared to join this amazing group of people as their “retreat pastor” for this year. The Frontera de Cristo board chose this year to plan a non-working retreat, with the following group activities: worshipping together, eating together, creating art together through tie-dying t-shirts and engaging in a painting workshop, all while enjoying the beauty of the part of God’s creation where the Sonoran Desert meets the Gulf of Mexico.

Psalm 139:13-14 — God formed each one of us, fearfully and wonderfully, knitting each one of us in our mother’s womb. Some participants shared about times when it was difficult for us to love ourselves and when it was even harder to feel and believe that we had been fearfully and wonderfully made in the image and likeness of God. Others shared that becoming aware of how God made each of us and loves each of us has helped bring us back to a place of healthy self-esteem and the ability to care for others.

Psalm 139:7-12 — Where can we go from God’s Spirit or flee from God’s presence?
We reflected about how God is always there for us, even when sometimes we would prefer to hide and not be seen or found. Margaret Wise Brown’s The Runaway Bunny offered us an image of the mother bunny from whom we can never really “escape” – and who encourages us to “just come home” to that loving mother, to our loving God.

As we reflected on Isaiah 55:12, we celebrated our joys, and we shared our needs and petitions: “For you shall go out in joy and be led back in peace. The mountains and the hills shall break forth into song, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.”

Returning to the theme of “fearfully and wonderfully made,” in Isaiah 43:1-4a, we heard God telling us that all of us are precious and honored in God’s sight, including the migrants who pass through the deserts and the waters and who do not always survive unharmed. Nevertheless, all of us, each one of us is precious and beloved by God.

While we played in the water and ate together, as we engaged in making art, taking walks, or taking naps, the time with the community of Frontera de Cristo became a time to strengthen existing relationships and to build some new ones. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and experience that became a true blessing for me and, I hope, for all who participated in the retreat.

Estimadas hermanas y estimados hermanos,

Soy una creación maravillosa, y por eso te doy gracias. Salmo 139:14a

Esta frase del Salmo 139 fue la guía central y el tema para el retiro reciente de Frontera de Cristo para el equipo de personal, la junta directiva, y sus familiares, el cual se llevó a cabo en Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, del 20 al 23 de julio del 2022.

Este texto bíblico se encarnó dentro de mí corazón y mis pensamientos mientras yo me preparaba para unirme a este grupo maravilloso de personas como su “pastora del retiro” para este año. La junta directiva de Frontera de Cristo decidió planificar un retiro que no fuera de “trabajo”, sino incorporaba actividades grupales tales como: alabanza, oración y reflexión bíblica; tiempos de comidas para compartir; y creación de arte juntos y juntas tiñendo camisetas/remeras y participando en un taller de pintura de cuadros. Todo eso, mientras disfrutábamos de la belleza de la creación de Dios donde el desierto de Sonora se encuentra con el Golfo de California.

En la medida de que nuestro grupo multilingüe, multi-generacional se reunía para los devocionales por las mañanas y por las tardes, reflexionábamos sobre los siguientes temas:

Salmo 139:13-14 — Dios mío, tú fuiste quien me formó en el vientre de mi madre. Tú fuiste quien formó cada parte de mi cuerpo. 14 Soy una creación maravillosa, y por eso te doy gracias. Todo lo que haces es maravilloso, ¡de eso estoy bien seguro!

Dios nos formó a cada persona, de una manera maravillosa, tejiendo a cada quien en el vientre de nuestra madre. Algunas personas compartimos sobre momentos en los cuales nos era difícil amarnos a nosotras mismas, y cuándo era aún más difícil sentir y creer que Dios nos había creado de manera maravillosa y a Su imagen y semejanza. Otras personas compartieron que, al darse cuenta de la forma maravillosa en que Dios nos había creado, y de la manera tan profunda en que Dios nos ama a cada una y cada uno, nos ha permitido volver a un estado de autoestima más saludable, con la capacidad de cuidar a otras personas.

Salmo 139:7-12 — ¿Dónde iremos del Espíritu de Dios o huiremos de la presencia de Dios?
¡Jamás podría yo alejarme de tu espíritu, o pretender huir de ti! 8 Si pudiera yo subir al cielo, allí te encontraría; si bajara a lo profundo de la tierra, también allí te encontraría. 9-10 Si volara yo hacia el este, tu mano derecha me guiaría; si me quedara a vivir en el oeste, también allí me darías tu ayuda. 11 Si yo quisiera que fuera ya de noche para esconderme en la oscuridad, ¡de nada serviría! 12 ¡Para ti no hay diferencia entre la oscuridad y la luz! ¡Para ti, hasta la noche brilla como la luz del sol!

Reflexionamos sobre la manera como Dios está siempre presente con y para nosotras y nosotres, aún en los momentos cuando preferiríamos escondernos para que no nos vean ni nos encuentren. El libro infantil de Margaret Wise Brown, The Runaway Bunny (“el conejito fugado de casa”) nos ofreció la imagen de una mamá coneja, de quien nunca podremos realmente “escapar” – y quien nos anima a “regresar a casa” al encuentro con esa madre amorosa, a nuestro Dios amoroso.

Al reflexionar sobre Isaías 55:12, celebramos nuestras alegrías; también compartimos nuestras necesidades y peticiones:
Ustedes…saldrán…con alegría y volverán con bien a su propio país. Cuando los montes y los cerros los vean, cantarán canciones muy alegres, y los árboles del campo aplaudirán.

Volviendo al tema de ser creadas y creados de manera maravillosa, en Isaías 43:1-4a, escuchamos a Dios contarnos que todos y todas somos preciosos y preciosas, y que merecemos honor ante los ojos de Dios. Esto incluye a las personas migrantes quienes pasan por los desiertos y las aguas y quienes no siempre sobreviven ni salen ilesas. No obstante, cada persona es preciosa y amada por Dios.

Cuando jugábamos en las aguas del mar y comíamos juntos y juntas, cuando participábamos en crear obras de arte, y cuando caminábamos, o hacíamos nuestras siestas, el tiempo compartido con la comunidad de Frontera de Cristo se convirtió en un tiempo para fortalecer relaciones y amistades ya existentes y de forjar algunas nuevas. Estoy profundamente agradecida por esta oportunidad y experiencia que se convirtió en una verdadera bendición par mí persona. Espero que así haya sido para todos y todas quienes participaron en el retiro.

What an amazing journey we’re on together! Our call to be a Matthew 25 denomination has challenged us in so many ways to lean into new ways of reaching out. As we take on the responsibilities of dismantling systemic racism, eradicating the root causes of poverty and engaging in congregational vitality, we find that the Spirit of God is indeed moving throughout World Mission. Of course, the past two years have also been hard for so many as we’ve ventured through another year of the pandemic, been confronted with racism, wars and the heart wrenching toll of natural disasters.
