Dear friends,

Greetings from Chiang Mai, Thailand to God’s fellow workers in Christ!

We hope you enjoy the abundant grace of God overflowing in your lives.

Jiyeon and I (Myoungho) completed our appointment in Hong Kong in 2021 as PC(USA) mission co-workers and were reappointed to Chiang Mai, Thailand in October 2021.

In Hong Kong, I taught courses on worship and sacred music at the Divinity School of Chung Chi College, Chinese University of Hong Kong. Teachers teach either in Cantonese or in English at the Divinity School in Hong Kong.

In Chiang Mai, classes are taught in Thai. To prepare, we are now learning Thai. At first, the Thai alphabet was like a picture to me, but now we can read and write sentences in which there are no spaces between words and no punctuation marks. It is not easy to learn a new language, but we are enjoying learning it.

On Sundays, Jiyeon and I visit local churches in Chiang Mai with the first-year students. Each Sunday we visit different churches. It usually takes 20 minutes to an hour and a half to travel to the churches depending on their locations. We travel with school-provided transportation, which is a modified truck.

The order of worship in these churches is similar to the order of worship in churches in the U.S.A. with a longer sermon time, which lasts 40 minutes to over an hour. After the worship service, we have a fellowship meal with the congregation. They usually provide rice noodles, which is a common food for locals. Then, we spend some time with church leaders who share the history, mission and ministry of the church with us. Since I am going to teach courses on worship, this weekly visitation helps me to understand the worship of the Thai churches and I believe it will bear much fruit in my class discussions on worship.

In Chiang Mai, the ‘Rainy Season,’ which means it rains every day, is over and now a new season, the ‘Cold Season,’ has arrived. It is like Fall in the U.S.A. It is cool in the morning and at night, but we are still exposed to scorching sunshine during the day. However, it is the best season to do outdoor activities.

A week ago, a festival called ‘Loi Krathong Festival,’ took place which is one of the biggest festivals in Thailand. There were fireworks at the riverside. It was difficult to get sleep since the loud noise of fireworks continued until 2 or 3 a.m. This festival originated as a thanksgiving to water since Thailand has been an agricultural country. They have passed down their faith and culture from their ancestors. They make a miniature boat with banana tree leaves and put a candle and a paper of prayer, etc., and then let the boat flow away on the river. They hope the river leads the boat to heaven. Some people make a balloon lantern, put a letter in it, and let the balloon goes up to the sky with the hope their wish will be accomplished.

And there is also another ritual asking forgiveness from the river for contaminating it carelessly. For some people, the ‘Loi Krathong Festival’ seems to become a religious ritual to which different meanings are added.

Since we came here, we are getting accustomed to the weather and life little by little without any difficulties. In the middle of March next year after the second semester, we are planning to visit the U.S.A. for three months for our home assignment. We are hoping to visit churches and gatherings and share our ministry in Chiang Mai so that we can join God’s ministry in Thailand. We would be grateful if you could contact us so that we can visit you.

Whether we can see you face to face or not, we would like you to remember God’s mission in Thailand in your prayers. We hope you join in the ministry which God shows through prophet Habakkuk, who says “… the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.” (Habakkuk 2:14, NIV). 태국 치앙마이에서 문안드립니다.

언제나 넉넉히 부으시는 주의 은혜를 누리시기를 바랍니다.

저희는 홍콩에서 미국장로교 선교사로 사역을 시작해서 2021년에 마치고, 2021년10월부터는 태국 치앙마이로 파송을 받았습니다. 홍콩에서는 홍콩중문대학교(Chinese University of Hong Kong)에 있는 숭기신학원(Divinity School of Chung Chi College)에서 예배와 교회음악에 관련된 과목들을 가르쳤습니다. 홍콩의 신학교에서는 수업이 광동어(Cantonese)나 영어로 진행되었는데, 이곳은 태국어로 하도록 되어있어서 현재는 태국어를 배우고 있습니다. 처음에는 태국어 알파벳이 모두 그림처럼 보였는데, 이제는 띄어쓰기와 문장부호가 없는 태국어 문장에서 단어들을 구분해 읽을 수 있게 되었습니다. 새로운 언어를 배우는 것이 쉽지 않지만 그래도 즐거운 마음으로 배우고 있습니다. 신학교는 10월15일부터 한 달간의 방학을 마치고 11월 셋째 주부터 2학기가 시작되었습니다. 이곳은 6월말경에 1학기가 시작되어 10월 중순에 마치고, 한 달간의 방학을 보내고 2학기가 시작되어 다음 해 3월 중순까지 계속됩니다. 태국에서 가장 더운 3월 중순부터 3개월간 방학을 합니다. 저는 이번 2학기에도 언어 공부를 계속합니다. 언어의 진보가 있도록 기도해주시기 바랍니다.

매 주일 신학교 1학년 학생들과 함께 지역의 교회들을 한 곳씩 방문합니다. 보통 20분에서 1시간30분 정도 걸리는 곳으로 갑니다. 교통수단은 학교에서 마련한 것인데 긴 트럭 같은 것을 개조한 차량을 타고 갑니다. 예배 순서는 미국에 있는 교회들과 거의 비슷하지만 설교 시간이 보통 40분에서 1시간 이상이 됩니다. 예배를 마치고 성도들과 함께 간단한 식사를 하는데, 보통 쌀국수를 먹습니다. 이곳에서 쌀국수가 가장 대중적인 음식인 듯 합니다. 식사를 마친 후에는 교회의 목회자와 함께 교회 역사와 사역에 관한 이야기를 2-3시간 정도 나누고 돌아옵니다. 저는 이곳에서도 예배학에 관련된 과목을 가르칠 것이기 때문에, 매주 방문하는 교회를 통해서 태국 교회의 예배를 이해하는데 많은 유익이 되고 있습니다. 교회 방문을 하면서 앞으로 예배학 수업 시간에 학생들과 함께 나눌 토론에 많은 기대를 하고 있습니다.

지금 이곳의 계절은 ‘추운 계절’이라고 부릅니다. 물론 미국의 날씨로 하면 가을에 가깝습니다. 아침 저녁은 선선하고 낮에는 뙤약볕이 내리쬐입니다. 매일 비가 내리는 ‘비의 계절’이 지나고 비가 오지 않는 건조한 날씨입니다. 그래서 그런지 야외 행사가 많은 계절이기도 합니다. 며칠전에는 태국의 큰 축제 중의 하나인 러이 끄라통이라는 축제 기간이 있었습니다. 강가에 모여서 폭죽을 쏘면서 축제를 하는데, 저녁부터 새벽2-3시까지 폭죽을 터뜨리는 소리에 잠을 이루기 어려웠습니다. 태국이 원래 농경 국가인지라, 추수를 마치고 나서 물에 감사한다는 의미로 그렇게 한다고 합니다. 조상 대대로 내려오는 신앙을 유지하고 있는 것이지요. 여기에 또 다른 의미가 더해져서, 바나나 나무 잎으로 조그만한 배 모형을 만들어서 그 위에 촛불과 기도문 등등을 올려놓고 강물에 떠내려 보내는 행사를 하는데, 강물의 끝이 하늘에 닿아있다고 믿고 그렇게 소원을 빌어 배 모형을 강물에 떠내려 보낸다고 합니다. 또한 등을 만들어서 같은 내용을 담아 하늘로 올려보내기도 합니다. 한 해 동안 강물을 더렵힌 것을 사죄하는 의식도 하는 것을 보면 이런저런 의미가 많이 합쳐진 종교적인 의식이 된 듯합니다.

저희는 이곳에 온 뒤로 별다른 어려움 없이 이곳 기후와 생활에 조금씩 익숙해 지고 있습니다. 이번 학기가 마치는 3월 중순부터 약 3개월 가량 미국을 방문하려고 합니다. 이 기간에 여러 교회와 모임들을 방문해서 선교 사역을 위해 함께 나누고 태국에서의 하나님의 선교 사역에 함께 기도하며 동참하는 기회를 갖기를 바라고 있습니다. 어떤 형태의 모임이든 가능한 기회가 있으셔서 연락주시면 방문하도록 하겠습니다.

방문할 수 있는 기회가 마련되거나 혹은 그렇지 않아도 여러분의 기도에 태국에서의 하나님의 선교를 위해서 기도해 주시면 감사하겠습니다. 하박국 선지자를 통해서 전하신 “물이 바다를 덮음 같이 여호와의 영광을 인정하는 것이 세상에 가득함이니라”는 하나님의 말씀이 이루어지는 일에 우리 모두가 함께 동참하기를 소원합니다. 저희를 생각해 주시고, 기도해 주셔서 감사합니다.

Dear Partners in God’s Mission,

What an amazing journey we’re on together! Our call to be a Matthew 25 denomination has challenged us in so many ways to lean into new ways of reaching out. As we take on the responsibilities of dismantling systemic racism, eradicating the root causes of poverty and engaging in congregational vitality, we find that the Spirit of God is indeed moving throughout World Mission. Of course, the past two years have also been hard for so many as we’ve ventured through another year of the pandemic, been confronted with racism, wars and the heart wrenching toll of natural disasters. And yet, rather than succumb to the darkness, we are called to shine the light of Christ by doing justice, loving kindness and walking humbly with God.

We are so grateful that you are on this journey as well. Your commitment enables mission co-workers around the world to accompany partners and share in so many expressions of the transformative work being done in Christ’s name. Thank you for your partnership, prayers and contributions to their ministries.
