“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”    Galatians 3:28

Dear friends,

In the heart of Sapporo, a wave of transformative discussions is reshaping the way we, as a church community, view and interact with the world around us. Spearheaded by the Peace Making group of the Hokkaido district – UCCJ (United Christian Church in Japan), recent seminars have ignited a necessary reevaluation of entrenched norms, such as patriarchy, gender binary, and rigid gender roles within our community and beyond.

The Challenge of Entrenched Norms

Our gathering in Asahikawa city was a beacon of enlightenment and challenge. It pushed us to critically assess the constructs that have fostered practices of violence and exclusion, both in society and within the church. This dialogue was an eye-opener for many and a reaffirmation for others, marking the beginning of a much-needed introspective journey.

Insights from Professor Akihiro Kobayashi

Professor Akihiro Kobayashi’s insightful critique on the contemporary family concept, rooted in queer theory and postcolonial criticism, posed a poignant question: “What does the future hold for LGBTQ+ rights in Japan within the Christian and imperial frameworks?” His reflections compel us to stay informed and united in our quest for understanding and acceptance.

The Impact of Seminars and Discussions

An upcoming seminar on understanding life and gender promises to be a cornerstone event, aiming to unravel the complexities of gender issues and the quest for authenticity. It is an opportunity for our community to delve into the questions that resonate with today’s youth, fostering a deeper comprehension of what it means to live true to oneself.

The Role of Local Church Members

A commendable initiative by a local church member from Sapporo, who has been at the forefront of supporting gender issues and aiding women, will be featured in an up-and-coming seminar. Their experiences and insights underscore the grassroots effort to instigate change, inspiring similar actions across communities.

The Broader Positive Impact

These seminars and discussions transcend the confines of our local community, holding the potential to foster a more inclusive and compassionate society. By challenging stereotypes and advocating for acceptance and love, the groundwork is being laid for significant societal transformation.

Call to Action

We stand at a pivotal juncture, with the power to drive meaningful change within our community and beyond. I urge each one of you to engage with our upcoming events, to immerse yourselves in the discourse, and to carry the message of inclusivity and peace into your circles. Prayer for the seminar on March 16 and be a part of the dialogue that shapes a better tomorrow.

As Paul wrote to the Church in Galatia nearly 2,000 years ago, he emphasizes the equality and unity that believers have in Christ, regardless of social status, ethnicity, or gender. Paul speaks to the idea that within the Christian community, there should be no distinctions that divide or exclude, but rather a recognition of the inherent worth and dignity of all individuals. How well do we line up with the message of promoting inclusivity and challenging societal norms to create a more compassionate and just society? Here in Hokkaido, it is being taken ever more seriously.

As we continue to challenge the status quo and engage in open, enlightening discussions, let us remember the essence of our faith and the power of community. “Ubi caritas, et amor, Deus ibi est” – where there is caring and love, God is indeed present. Together, we can walk our talk toward a more understanding, accepting, and compassionate world.
