How beautiful upon the mountains
    are the feet of the messenger who announces peace,
who brings good news,
    who announces salvation,
    who says to Zion, “Your God reigns.” (Isiah 52:7)

Dear friends,

Jieun and I were invited to participate in the rededication service of Rev. Dr. James Scarth Gale’s gravestone in Bath, England on the first week of October 2022. Rev. Gale (1863-1937) was a Canadian Presbyterian missionary who was a Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (PCUSA) missionary in Korea for 40 years (1888-1928). (The PCUSA was a forerunner of the current PC(USA).)

Gale was the first minister of the historic Youndong Presbyterian Church in Seoul (1900-1927) and an educator who founded Kyungshin Middle and High School, as well as Chungshin Girls’ Middle and High School.  

Being a very gifted translator, Gale contributed to the first complete Korean Bible in 1911 and the Korean Revised Version in 1938. He translated Pilgrim’s Progress by John Bunyan into Korean in 1893, the first work of Western literature to be printed in the Korean hangul script. He also translated many Korean classic novels into English.

I preached at a joint service with Redland Park and Bristol Korean Presbyterian Church on Sunday, sharing my immigrant experience in the U.S., and lifting up the hospitality of the Redland Park congregation to host Korean congregations who were strangers in England. I believe that hospitality is one of the fundamental spirits of mission. Both the Korean people, the Presbyterian missionaries in the past, and the PC(USA) mission co-workers in the present have experienced genuine hospitality, and it can be said that mutual hospitality was one key to the amazing growth of the church in Korea.

Thanks to the dedication of many mission co-workers of the Presbyterian Church, like James Gale, not only are Korean churches thriving but Korean society is thriving as well. There are many hurdles to overcome, but we hope that current members of PC(USA) may visit Korea and the region of East Asia to see what God has done through our faithful mission partnerships.

좋은 소식을 전하며 평화를 공포하며 복된 좋은 소식을 가져오며 구원을 공포하며          시온을 향하여 이르기를 네 하나님이 통치하신다 하는 자의 산을 넘는 발이 어찌 그리 아름다운가 (이사야 52:7)

저희 부부는 영국의 바스에 있는 제임스 게일 선교사 묘비 재단장 기념식에 참석하기 위해 지난 10월 초 영국을 방문했습니다. 게일목사님(1863-1937)은 캐나다 장로교 선교사였으나 미국북장로교 선교사로 재파송을 받아 40년간(1888-1928) 한국에서 섬기셨습니다.

게일 선교사는 역사적인 서울 연동교회 초대 목사였으며(1900-1927), 경신중고등학교와 정신여중고등학교에서 교사로도 일하셨습니다.

언어에 재능이 있으셔서 게일 선교사는 최초 한글 성경전서(1911)와 개역판(1938) 번역 위원으로 봉사하셨습니다. 한국에서 최초 출판된 서양 문학인 존 번연의 <천로역정>을 한글로 번역하셨고, 다수의 한국 고전을 영문으로도 번역하셨습니다. 

게일 선교사의 손녀들인 웬디와 로스매리, 예장 통합 동역자들, 연동교회 관계자, 레드랜드 연합개혁교회, 브리스톨 한인장로교회 분들 등과 함께 그의 묘비 재단장 기념식에 참석한 것은 저희들에게 큰 영광이었습니다. 게일 선교사와 아다 루이사 게일 사모님의 일생을 기억하며 기념하게 되어 기뻤습니다. 영국에서 보기 드문 맑은 날씨 속에서 아름답게 진행되었고, 게일 선교사님에 대해 많이 알게되었습니다.

주일에는 레드랜드 교회와 브리스톨 한인장로교회가 함께 드리는 연합예배에서 제가 설교를 하였습니다. 저의 이민 생활 경험을 나누며 브리스톨 한인장로교에게 예배당을 사용할 수 있도록 해준 레드랜드 교회의 환대에 감사 인사를 전했습니다. 그리고 선교사와 한국인들의 상호 환대가 성공적인 한국선교의 중요한 요인 중에 하나였음을 말했습니다.

오늘날 한국교회 뿐 아니라 한국사회의 엄청난 발전은 제임스 게일 선교사와 같은 많은 미국장로교 선교사님들의 헌신 덕이었다 해도 과언이 아닐 것입니다. 비록 아직 넘어야 할 장애물들이 많지만, 저는 미국장로교 성도들이 한국과 동아시아를 방문해서 하나님께서 어떻게 신실한 선교 동역자들을 통해 일을 하셨는지 눈으로 확인할 수 있기를 소망합니다.
