If we will have the wisdom to survive,
\nto stand like slow growing trees
\non a ruined place, renewing, enriching it…
\nthen a long time after we are dead
\nthe lives our lives prepare will live
\nhere, their houses strongly placed
\nupon the valley sides…
\nThe river will run
\nclear, as we will never know it…
\nOn the steeps where greed and ignorance cut down
\nthe old forest, an old forest will stand,
\nits rich leaf-fall drifting on its roots.
\nThe veins of forgotten springs will have opened.
\nFamilies will be singing in the fields…
\nMemory,
\nnative to this valley, will spread over it
\nlike a grove, and memory will grow
\ninto legend, legend into song, song
\ninto sacrament. The abundance of this place,
\nthe songs of its people and its birds,
\nwill be health and wisdom and indwelling
\nlight. This is no paradisal dream.
\nIts hardship is its reality.<\/p>\n
