{"id":373,"date":"2009-03-19T19:17:08","date_gmt":"2009-03-19T19:17:08","guid":{"rendered":""},"modified":"2021-01-29T20:07:19","modified_gmt":"2021-01-30T01:07:19","slug":"the-world-according-to-monsanto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/food-faith\/2009\/03\/19\/the-world-according-to-monsanto\/","title":{"rendered":"the world according to monsanto"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This morning, I&#8217;m adding this late-breaking news from Germany&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoPlainText\"><strong>Germany bans Monsanto&#8217;s GM maize<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 13px;font-family: Arial\">Germany is to ban the cultivation of genetically modified<br \/>\n(GM) maize &#8211; the only GM crop widely grown in Europe.The decision, announced on Tuesday by German Agriculture<br \/>\nMinister Ilse Aigner, is a blow to the US biotech firm Monsanto, which markets<br \/>\nthe maize.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 13px;font-family: Arial\">Monsanto&#8217;s variety, called MON 810, is resistant to the<br \/>\ncorn borer, a moth larva which eats the stem. MON 810 is controversial in the EU. Several countries<br \/>\nhave banned it, defying the European Commission.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 13px;font-family: Arial\">Ms Aigner, a member of the conservative Bavaria-based<br \/>\nChristian Social Union (CSU), said she had concluded that<strong> &#8220;there is a<br \/>\njustifiable reason to believe that&#8230; MON 810 presents a danger to the<br \/>\nenvironment&#8221;.<\/strong>The variety has been allowed in Germany since 2005. Ms<br \/>\nAigner said the decision to ban it now, based on new data, was purely<br \/>\nscientific, not political. She also said it was a specific case, and not a<br \/>\nfundamental decision against all GM crops.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 13px;font-family: Arial\">In March EU governments resisted European Commission<br \/>\npressure to get bans on MON 810 lifted. The commission wanted Austria and<br \/>\nHungary to allow cultivation of MON 810. The variety is also banned in France<br \/>\nand Greece. The UK was among a handful of countries that supported<br \/>\nthe commission&#8217;s position, the AFP news agency reports.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 13px;font-family: Arial\">Germany was planning to sow MON 810 on just 3,600<br \/>\nhectares (8,892 acres) for this summer&#8217;s harvest, mostly in its eastern<br \/>\nstates.
