\"Desert-travel-walk\"<\/a> Matthew 6:16 says <\/span><\/span>“And whenever you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for
\nthey disfigure their faces so as to show others that they are fasting.
\nTruly I tell you, they have received their reward.”<\/p>\n

Jane Larsen-Wigger preached on this last week noting:
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know if you caught it or not, but in these words of
\nJesus that we just heard, the one little word that catches
\nme up is his use of the word \u2018when.\u2019\u00a0 Jesus says \u201cWHEN you
\nfast . . .\u201d\u00a0 Not \u201cIF you fast . . .\u201d\u00a0 but WHEN.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Fasting is <\/strong>a tough one. So easy to come up with reasons why I shouldn’t.<\/p>\n

“I’m too skinny.”
\n“I need my energy for ____”
\n“I’m going to this picnic tomorrow.”
\n“It’s not going to make me any holier.”
\nAnd so on…<\/div>\n

Jane reminded us that fasting is not the end; rather, fasting is a tool to get us past ourselves and beyond the many distractions –<\/p>\n

Another thing that is interesting in Jesus\u2019 Sermon on the
\nMount is that after talking about fasting, Jesus goes on to
\ntalk about things that get in the way of trusting God:
\nearthly treasures, trying to serve both God and wealth;
\nexcessive worrying, judging others, profaning the holy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

Hmmm, maybe this part of his sermon points to why fasting is
\nimportant\u2014or maybe he\u2019s suggesting some of what we could
\nfast from: earthly treasures, other masters, worry, judging,
\ndisrespect, profaning the holy.<\/p>\n

\n


\nThere are things\u2014plenty of things\u2014besides food that we can
\nfast from.\u00a0 In a chapter on Fasting, Marjorie Thompson
\nsuggests we ask ourselves: \u201cWhat is consuming me?
\nPossessing me?\u00a0 What do I do to excess?\u201d <\/span><\/div>\n

Good questions for me, you and fellow Americans who, with 5% of the global population, consume more than 20% of its resources.<\/p>\n

Whatever that is, chances are that it is getting in the way
\nof a relationship of trust with the Living God.<\/span><\/div>\n
