Agroecology includes an explicit focus on social and economic dimensions of food systems and places a strong focus on the rights of women, youth and indigenous people.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Agroecology<\/strong> has so much going for it and today we will touch on the first seven of its advantages. Compared to the dominant model of industrial agriculture, <strong>agroecology<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3154 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianmission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/index.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"174\" \/>Is better for the<strong> God&#8217;s creation<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Uses fewer or no\u00a0<strong>chemicals<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Maintains more<strong> biodiversity<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Increases <strong>soil fertility<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Reduces, rather than increases, <strong>global warming<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Is more resilient in the face of<strong> disasters and extreme weather<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Feeds<strong> more people<\/strong> and provides <strong>healthier food<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Is better<strong> for family farmers <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Provides<strong> better jobs<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Builds<strong> healthier communities and stronger local economies<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Fosters a more<strong> democratic society<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3156 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianmission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/biodiversity-500x281.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/biodiversity-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/biodiversity-1000x563.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/biodiversity.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>#1 through 5:\u00a0 Better for God&#8217;s Creation and Biodiversity<\/h3>\n<p>Agroecological farming is healthier for the environment, for the farmer, and for the eater. Food is produced from soil whose health has been nurtured through the application of organic material, cover cropping, and other ecological practices, not through chemical fertilizers that contaminate water supplies. Crop health is addressed through crop rotation, sophisticated forms of cultivation, organic pest management, and the use of naturally resistant crop and animal varieties, not through synthetic pesticides or genetically-altered organisms designed to resist those pesticides. Numerous studies and experiences show that a healthy soil results in healthy crops that are able to withstand challenging growing conditions better than chemically treated soil and crops. Side by side trials at Rodale Institute showed that organic farming systems <a href=\"http:\/\/rodaleinstitute.org\/our-work\/farming-systems-trial\/farming-systems-trial-30-year-report\/\">out-produced<\/a> conventional ones by 31% during periods of drought. In a volatile economic climate, agroecological farming tends towards more diversity and therefore more stability in a farmer\u2019s income. According to the United Nations <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unep.org\/dewa\/agassessment\/\">IAASTD Study<\/a>, agroecological farming has the best chance of feeding humanity with healthy food in a sustainable manner far into the future.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1748\" style=\"width: 390px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1748\" class=\"wp-image-1748\" src=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianmission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/greens.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"380\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/greens.png 468w, https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/greens-400x300.png 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1748\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">[Photo by author]<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>#7:\u00a0 Feeds<strong> more people<\/strong> and provides <strong>healthier food<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Diversified, agroecological farms produce more food per acre than conventional, single crop agriculture. Agroecological farming is also more productive in areas with marginal land and unpredictable weather, exactly where most impoverished people live. The United Nations&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.unep.org\/dewa\/agassessment\/\">IAASTD Report<\/a> and meta-studies over many years, show how small- and mid-sized diversified organic farming operations can produce more high qualifood per acre than industrial methods. And they do so without destructive social and environmental effects.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, agroecological farming produces <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.cambridge.org\/action\/displayAbstract;jsessionid=C7A168047802DB408D2E23E573E16211.journals?aid=9325471&amp;fileId=S0007114514001366\">more nutritious food<\/a> and reduces human contact with known <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beyondpesticides.org\/infoservices\/pesticidefactsheets\/toxic\/index.php\">toxins<\/a> found in pesticides, herbicides and fungicides. The methods used build a healthy ecosystem in partnership with nature and with greater community <a href=\"http:\/\/rodaleinstitute.org\/our-work\/farming-systems-trial\/farming-systems-trial-30-year-report\/\">benefits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Agroecology is better for farmers and the environment, enhances biological diversity, provides more and better food, and it is more likely to sustain our and other species into the future.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>You can be part of the solution<\/strong> by buying food from local and regional farms that practice agroecology, opposing farm policies that bolster industrial agriculture, and advocating for biodiversity-friendly ranching and farming.
