That&#8217;s exactly what we&#8217;re doing now.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s from a <a title=\"PBS Now | Taxing the Poor | www.pbs.org\/now\/shows\/415\/video.html\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/now\/shows\/415\/video.html\">recent edition of <em>PBS Now<\/em><\/a> about the regressive sales tax on food in Alabama, one of only <a title=\"State Grocery Tax Provisions map | www.cbpp.org\/images\/cms\/3-16-06sfp3-f1.jpg\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cbpp.org\/images\/cms\/3-16-06sfp3-f1.jpg\" title=\"\" rel=\"lightbox-0\">two states<\/a> that tax groceries at the regular rate. That&#8217;s a huge expense for the poorest citizens&#8230; say a family of four living below the federal poverty line, who would<span class=\"abody\"> save $200 to $300 a year with the tax break.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Alabama state legislature is voting on <span class=\"abody\">House Bill 1 this week, which would let voters decide whether to rewrite the state<br \/>\nconstitution to remove the 4 percent state sales tax from groceries and over-the-counter drugs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"abody\"> PHP has supported <em>Alabama Arise<\/em>&#8216;s efforts to reform the state&#8217;s tax codes.
