\n\"Dairy-fresh\"<\/a> <\/span>Dairy Fresh non-dairy creamer… Do they think we are idiots?!<\/p>\n

My non-dairy creamer,
\nmanufactured in Dallas, Texas with 8 ingredients not squeezed from a cow, plus
\nmultiple artificial colors and flavors (who knows what the total tally is!) is
\ncalled DAIRY FRESH.<\/p>\n

Then, believe it or not, I put it in my tea.<\/p>\n

Maybe I am an idiot.<\/p>\n

OKAY. Well, here is what I sat down to write about…<\/p>\n

Local food. Or, why not local everything?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dan Houston, of Civic Economics, in Austin, Texas \u2013 not
\ntoo far from the non-dairy Dairy Fresh factory \u2013 reports that New Orleans could
\nboost its economy by $235 million if residents shifted 10% of their spending
\nfrom national chains to local businesses.<\/p>\n

$235 million each year! This would translate into
\n100s of new jobs. Based on other cities, Dan estimates that about a 1,000 jobs would
\nbe created. If your town or city is anything like Louisville, you could use more
\ngood jobs, right?<\/p>\n

Deep thinkers might wonder if new jobs in your town would
\ncause the loss of jobs somewhere else. Fortunately it doesn\u2019t work like that.
\nWhile a few jobs might be lost in various locations in the US or overseas, the
\nreason why a small shift to local purchasing -10 cents on the dollar \u2013 creates
\nso much new wealth and jobs is the power of local money circulation. The
\nreason: Local money changes hands many more times than money going into chains
\n\u2013 most of which ends up accumulating in corporate coffers and in the dividends
\nof a relatively small number of stock holders.<\/p>\n

The easiest way to support the local economy is through
\nour food and beverage choices. Even at your local pub, you can choose the
\nhometown brew. For us, it\u2019s the Bluegrass Brewing Company.<\/p>\n

But competition in the food arena is fierce. A
\nworker\/producer cooperative is often the only way to survive
\n\"Farmer6-8\"<\/a> dirt-cheap dairy
\nprices and corporate farm competition these days.\u00a0 Small-scale dairy farmers, by joining with others in co-ops
\nsuch as Organic Valley or Hudson Valley Fresh, find they can make a decent
\nliving while producing a product healthier for both the cow and the consumer.
\nOrganic Valley distributes nationally, but customers of Hudson Valley Fresh,
\nwith its eight family farms, must be within 80 miles of the co-op. So the dairy
\nalso leaves a small carbon footprint.<\/p>\n

Michael Schuman, who I suspect I\u2019ll see later today at
\nthe Food and Community Conference, has written about local marketing strategy
\nin The Small Mart Revolution and the \u201csmall is beautiful\u201d E.F. Schumacher
\nSociety is a hub for information.<\/p>\n
