<\/span><\/p>\n

I have the privilege of asking
\nmyself \u201cwhere does my food come from?\u201d and \u201chow was this food produced?\u201d These two
\nquestions are becoming more popular, but there is a more urgent question for
\nmany people, and that is \u201cdo I have food to eat today?\u201d I am ashamed because
\nmany of the people who grow, harvest, and process the food that I eat have to
\nfirst ask themselves that more imperative question.<\/p>\n

Farmworkers are largely excluded
\nfrom federal minimum-wage laws. Many individuals toil for excruciatingly long
\nhours doing backbreaking work often without sanitation facilities in the
\nfields, all for a sub-poverty salary.<\/p>\n

Imagine if this were to change.
\nImagine if farmworkers earned not only a minimum wage, but a decent living
\nwage. Imagine if working on a farm was a celebrated, respected, and
\nsought-after job.<\/p>\n

Food would certainly be more
\nexpensive for someone like myself. I\u2019m okay with that. We should be paying the
\nfull cost of what we eat, and that includes the social and<\/em> environmental costs. If we can afford to ask ourselves those
\nfirst two questions, then we can afford fair food. Besides, we spend a smaller
\npercentage of our income on food today than ever before.<\/p>\n

Our society has devalued
\nagriculture and detached itself from the root of food. We\u2019re now ingrained in a
\nfood system that only perpetuates the problem. There are no easy fixes, but
\nfixes absolutely must be made. I am ashamed that I still eat food that supports
\nour broken system, because alternatives readily exist. I\u2019m ashamed that I too
\noften opt for the supermarket instead of the farmers\u2019 market. Every time we
\npurchase fair food, we\u2019re supporting alternative and sustainable systems. Every
\npurchase is a vote, but I could be doing more. Farmworkers should be included
\nin minimum wage laws, and I can have a voice in that. By supporting alternative
\nsystems and using our voice for change, we can begin to create a more
\nenvironmentally sustainable and socially just world, where all individuals have
\naccess to food and are compensated fairly for their work. I am ashamed, but I
\nhave hope.<\/p>\n
