To celebrate its launch, we encourage people fighting for food justice and sovereignty to take actions during the week of October 10-17.<\/p>\n<p>In solidarity with people all over the world, we call on food justice groups to hold community events that educate, celebrate, and create affordable access to safe, healthy, culturally appropriate food while turning our food systems into engines for local economic development. We call for actions to build food sovereignty in the US.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12px;color: #bf5f00\"><span style=\"font-size: 12px;color: #bf5f00\"><span style=\"color: #bf5f00\">October 10:\u00a0 Global Work Party to Tackle Climate Change<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #bf5f00\">October 12:\u00a0 Day of Indigenous Resistance to Conquest<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #bf5f00\">October 15:\u00a0 World Rural Women&#8217;s Day<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #bf5f00\">October 16:\u00a0 World Food Day\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #bf5f00\">October 17:\u00a0 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nOctober 10:\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/350.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">350.org<\/a> is calling for actions on 10\/10\/10. <\/strong><br \/>\nUp to one-third of global greenhouse gases come from industrial agricultural, but small-scale farming can eliminate hunger and cool the planet. Climate change also disproportionately affects food insecure people and communities of color. Some suggested actions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Throw a work party to support or create community gardens or farmers\u201a markets<\/li>\n<li>Hold &#8220;Farm to School Fresh Food Feasts&#8221; or a community meal of local food<\/li>\n<li>Petition local governments to support local agriculture to end climate change and poverty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nOctober 12:\u00a0 Day of Indigenous Resistance to Conquest <\/strong>(formerly Columbus Day) is celebrated across the Americas with actions toward recovering the land, water, and autonomy that belonged to indigenous peoples and their displaced urban allies. Currently, corporations are grabbing land in the U.S. and all over the world, depriving all people of their rights and their livelihoods. Some suggested actions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Celebrate &#8220;liberated land&#8221; &#8211; community gardens, public parks, or protected indigenous lands<\/li>\n<li>Join existing land campaigns and alliances like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.righttothecity.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Right to the City<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.takebacktheland.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Take Back the Land<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fian.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">FIAN International<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Circulate petitions denouncing genetically engineered food, fish, and trees<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>October 15: World Rural Women&#8217;s Day<\/strong><br \/>\nRural women make up more than a quarter of the world population. They hold a key role in food production and contribute to the well-being of their families, rural economies, and food security. Some suggested actions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Write a letter to the editor of your local or regional paper about the importance of rural women in our states and around the world for food production and food security<\/li>\n<li>Invite women farmers to discuss their lives and struggles<\/li>\n<li>Create an award for exceptional local rural women or women&#8217;s groups<\/li>\n<li>Link up with sister organizations for a joint event like a community meal<\/li>\n<li>Inform local media, the mayor, city council, and local business associations about what you&#8217;re doing and why<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>October 16:\u00a0 Ending Poverty by Rebuilding Local Food Economies\/World Food Day<\/strong><br \/>\nLa Via Campesina &#8212; a global movement fighting for food sovereignty and agrarian reform &#8212; calls for actions against transnational corporations responsible for privatizing seeds, promoting a chemical-dependent, industrial-scale form of agriculture and aquabusiness\/industrial fisheries that bankrupt and displace fishers, farmers, and farmworkers. Local food economies are the solution. Some suggested actions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Declare <em>Who Fishes Matters<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.change.org\/nama\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">signing the petition<\/a> and uploading your own short video about why the concentration, consolidation and industrial-scale takeover of our fisheries is a bad idea. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.namanet.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">More action steps<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Support <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ciw-online.org\/tools.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CIW&#8217;s Campaign for Fair Food<\/a> against supermarkets that refuse to pay higher wages to farm workers<\/li>\n<li>Host a Food Justice Workshop to share food and information about taking back our local food systems<\/li>\n<li>Celebrate and organize <a href=\"http:\/\/video.google.com\/videoplay?docid=-2884467460474749788#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grub Parties<\/a> with local chefs, gardeners, farmers, and eaters to build community and dismantle racism and sexism<\/li>\n<li>Promote local food with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oIesMnf3Lzc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer lightbox-video-0\">Farmers&#8217; Market Fair Food Festivals<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Protest BP in solidarity with fishermen, farmers, restaurant workers, and others in the Gulf of Mexico food system<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>October 17:\u00a0 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>October 10-17, 2010 is also the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.e-alliance.ch\/en\/s\/food\/2010-churches-week-of-action-on-food\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Churches Week of Action on Food<\/strong><\/a>, and denominations and congregations in the US around the world are praying, studying and acting during this historic week. Guides, worship resources, and action ideas are available.
