You see, my father passed in November last year. Fortunately I was there, along with my sister and his 2nd wife, when he drifted off.<\/p>\n<p>I actually thought this: &#8220;If my dad were here, I wonder if he&#8217;d be proud of me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then I thought longingly of my two sons, feeling the passing of time, and how &#8216;the times they are a changin&#8217;.\u00a0\u00a0<em>Pondering&#8230;what does meaningfully connecting with others look like?\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Which all reminded me of this morning&#8217;s \u00dcber driver, Jezus. <em>Confession time. I used to almost never take taxis and I had planned to take the bus for 3.80 zloty (USD $1). But after jet lag kept me up until 3am, I pushed my alarm from 6:30 to 7:23am and splurged on the \u00dcber (about $5).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jezus, 38, was divorced and has a son who turns seven next week. &#8220;Jezus, do you get to see him often?&#8221;\u00a0&#8220;No, not so much.&#8221; &#8220;That&#8217;s sad.&#8221; &#8220;Yes&#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So I am feeling nostalgic, especially after a day of stories &#8211; many stories of climate chaos &#8211; with two contrasting dynamics.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1500 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianmission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/climatejustice-500x375.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"270\" srcset=\"https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/climatejustice-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/climatejustice-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/climatejustice.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>One theme was heart-breaking pain, sorrow and devastation that the world has already been experiencing from climate change.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Remember. It was 30 years ago when\u00a0James Hansen, the 77-year-old former Nasa climate scientist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/jun\/19\/james-hansen-nasa-scientist-climate-change-warning\">sounded the alarm<\/a> about global warming!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The stories were of&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Islands being swallowed by the rising seas.<\/li>\n<li>Indigenous people from Peru, terrorized by the extractive economy, calling for an end to rapacious mining of their territory: Madre de Dios (Mother of God).<\/li>\n<li>Impoverished small-scale farmers throughout the Global South &#8212; who contributed almost <em>nothing<\/em> to the carbon burning bacchanalia of the last 100 years &#8212; viewed as a way for climate bean counters to reduce global emissions, yet not receiving the funds to help them adapt to extreme weather and falling crop prices. Ram, from Christian Aid, told me this morning that in his Indian state of Andra Pradesh, onions now sell for 1 rupee a piece and cost 5 rupees to produce. <em>I&#8217;ll come back to this topic tomorrow!<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>The second theme was the eye candy of glitzy videos, glossy reports, and fancy-suit optimism around the newest campaigns, formulas, calculations, and public-private investment strategies.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t get me wrong. The summit just started and there is ample hope.
