{"id":1323,"date":"2018-08-10T10:34:01","date_gmt":"2018-08-10T14:34:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.presbyterianmission.org\/food-faith\/?p=1323"},"modified":"2021-01-29T12:17:35","modified_gmt":"2021-01-29T17:17:35","slug":"organic-milk-scores","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/food-faith\/2018\/08\/10\/organic-milk-scores\/","title":{"rendered":"Why did your organic milk get a &#8216;0 cow&#8217; rating?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One would hope that organic milk would be healthy as well as being good for land and cows.<\/p>\n<p>Alas.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornucopia.org\/scorecard\/dairy\/\">This scorecard<\/a> crushes that hope.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornucopia.org\/scorecard\/dairy\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1324 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.presbyterianmission.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/org-milk-500x247.png\" alt=\"Chart of organic milk rankings\" width=\"350\" height=\"173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/org-milk-500x247.png 500w, https:\/\/centernet.pcusa.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/org-milk.png 757w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Based on a just-completed comprehensive study &#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornucopia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/DairyReport2018-full-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Full Report<\/a>\u00a0|\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornucopia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/DairyReport2018-exec-summary.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Executive Summary<\/a>, the Cornucopia Institute has released a handy five-cow ranking chart where you can find 160 organic milk brands.<\/p>\n<p>I was eager to see how Horizon Organic Milk fared against the Organic Valley Grassmilk that we regularly buy.\u00a0Horizon &#8211; owned by the giant Dean Foods &#8211; didn&#8217;t get a single cow and Organic Valley, while not gaining 5 cows, received the 4-cow excellent rating.<\/p>\n<h4>What does the scorecard measure?<\/h4>\n<p>The Institute explains the scorecard applies criteria that highlights the best <em>beyond organic<\/em>\u00a0practices\u00a0discussed in their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cornucopia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/DairyReport2018-full-report.pdf\">report<\/a>, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The percentage of grass in a cow\u2019s diet;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How much pasture is available for grazing;<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The level of control a brand has over its milk supply;\u00a0and,<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>How the farmer suppliers expand their milking\u00a0herd (some are bringing in conventional cows).<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>The scorecard also helps consumers find products with\u00a0specific attributes they may desire, such as 100% grass-fed\u00a0or dairies that use soy-free feed. The ratings help consumers\u00a0separate brands that meet the spirit and letter of\u00a0the law from industry scofflaws and profiteers.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Importantly, the scorecard ratings also spotlight family-scale\u00a0organic farmstead dairies, in every region, that go\u00a0beyond organic, making it easy for consumers to vote for\u00a0integrity with their family\u2019s food dollars.
