SNAP and the Real Challenge

The stress that many of us experienced the past week during the SNAP Challenge was just around food, it didn’t include every other aspect of our lives and the financial pressure that comes with living on little income.

As difficult as it is to create a full and healthy diet on $30 per person per week, the real issue is the challenge of all of the other budget demands on a low-income household, which is why the SNAP benefits is often the only way to afford food.

Bloom Where You are Planted

I hope to encourage my friends in the affordable housing field to not only allow residents to plant gardens if they chose, but to encourage it. A garden of flowers and/or vegetables goes a long way to making any place feel like home.

What are you EATING?!

What are you eating?!   To be honest I don’t really know.  Quite often it is wrapped in paper and plastic and has unpronounceable ingredients listed, but that still doesn’t answer the question.

Cornjerker

My high school mascot was the Cornjerker, which was a big ear of corn that ran out on the field (you can’t make this stuff up). So as I think about food and farms it is to that traditional back drop of the small family farm in communities where I was raised.
