How to be a locavore

Locavore: someone who eats locally grown food.

Thirteen plant foods can be grown successfully anywhere in the continental United States. These can be eaten locally and in season without needing to import them from afar.

1. Apples
2. Lettuce
3. Carrots
4. Potatoes
5. Onions
6. Tomatoes
7. Strawberries
8. Corn
9. Peppers
10. Raspberries and blackberries
11. Greens (spinach, collards, kale)
12. Herbs (thyme, sage, oregano, basil)
13. Root vegetables (beets, turnips, rutabaga)

This list comes from a gem of a book called, Full Moon Feast: Food and the Hunger for Connection by Jessica Prentice, recommended to me by Jana, who hopefully will become a contributing author to this blog! Here is a thumbs-up review of the book by Sally Fallon.
