Connecting the Dots Webinar: The Long-Term Effects of Military Presence on Local Communities Leaders of the Vieques Women’s Alliance share the challenges at this Puerto Rican municipality island 20 years after the closure of a military practice base

February 28 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm EST

The municipality island of Vieques, located in the southeastern region of the Puerto Rican archipelago, has faced many challenges in the last decades. During the 90s, the island hosted a military base for live-fire bombing practices. Since its establishment, local communities protested against it, but it wasn’t until 2000 that a surge of local, national and international leaders joined protests calling to cease base operations.  Since hurricane Maria in 2017, Vieques has no hospital and offers only a community clinic with a dialysis treatment trailer for a population of about 10,000. For more specific medical treatment, “Viequenses” need to fly or take a ferry to Isla Grande.  There is no Presbyterian presence in Vieques, although through Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and its response to hurricane Maria, partnerships have developed.  Last March, during a Travel Study Seminar led by the Presbyterian Peacemaking Program and PDA, the group was able to visit Vieques and meet with the leadership of the Alianza de Mujeres Viequenses to learn about the current context of Vieques in terms of economy, health, transportation and land rights, while also sharing signs of hope.
